After the season was over I arranged to take a trip to the Pacific coast, thinking a change of scenery would divert my mind. Accordingly, all arrangements having been made, Mrs. Perkins and I started on the morning of January 15, 1872. We left Stiles' Station in the morning for California, by way of the North Penn Railroad, about seven o'clock, and Philadelphia about nine. We passed Bethlehem and Allentown and crossed the Allegheny Mountains; descended into the beautiful Wyoming Valley, and passed up the Susquehanna river to Wilkesbarre, where we took dinner. We then traveled on to Waverly; reached Elmira at about ten o'clock, where we connected with the New York and Erie, and proceeded to Buffalo; thence we went to Niagara Falls, where we spent a day. Being desirous of seeing the Falls in winter, and as the weather was very cold, this offered a grand opportunity. The Falls certainly presented a very different appearance from what they did in summer. The spray had frozen to the nearby trees, and everything seemed crystallized. After cautiously feeling our way to the brink, the sight presented seemed even more beautiful than I had ever imagined. Huge icicles hung around the precipice and over on the island, frozen from the spray. They seemed to glitter like so many diamonds in the sun. Our short stay was very pleasant, and after dinner (about one o'clock) we started westward, passing over the suspension bridge, where we had a grand view of the whirlpool below. Although it was winter, the ride through Canada was full of interest. After a journey of about two hundred and forty miles we reached Detroit. We started at once for Chicago, two hundred and ninety miles through Michigan, and arrived there...
