In light of the Eurozone crisis and the growth of Asian economies, have new challenges emerged for the relations between nations in these regions? As the Asian consumer class grows and its culture globalizes, what does this mean for the export of Eurocentric values and norms? And what does the future hold for the economic, political, and cultural policies between these two powerful regions? This book explores the relationship between European and emerging Asian economies, as globalization changes the international economic and political landscape. Reflecting on past interactions and possibilities for the future, the book brings together Asian and European perspectives from former politicians, diplomats, and academic experts to examine questions around trade and security, rights and climate change, identity clashes, and the colonial legacy. The book is a timely consideration of highly topical questions that will shape international politics in the twenty-first century.

Financial globalisation has been associated with divergent current account patterns in emerging market economies. While countries in emerging Asia have been running sizeable current account surpluses, countries in emerging Europe have been facing large current account deficits. In this paper we test for the relevance of financial market characteristics in explaining divergent current account patterns in emerging Europe and emerging Asia based on the assumption that both regions constitute two different convergence clubs with the euro area and the US representing the core, respectively. In line with the theoretical literature, we find that better developed and more integrated financial markets increase emerging markets ́ ability to borrow abroad. The degree of financial integration within the convergence clubs as well as the extent of reserve accumulation are found to be the most significant factors to explain divergent current account patterns in emerging Europe and emerging Asia. We conclude that the overall character of integration matters for the pattern of current account developments in catching-up economies.

How are the rising mutual concerns of Asian and European countries shaping their approaches to the international order? Contributors to this volume discuss emerging critical issues in International relations, including the Indo-Pacific constructs, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and the progress of established regional security mechanisms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. They also compare western and non-western approaches to these issues, with a holistic perspective on the origins and evolutions of these approaches. Both the Indo-Pacific constructs and BRI present a remarkable set of opportunities for Europe as well as Asia. This book presents key implications of the changing politico-security dynamics in the two regions from the perspectives of both Asian and European scholars and theoretical traditions. A must-read for scholars of International Relations with a focus on relations between Asia and Europe.

Critically, it is important to determine whether the latest economic challenges in Europe have led to the deterioration of the EU's external images in emerging' Asia. The volume features results of several "EU external perceptions" projects supported by Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) and Jean Monnet Programme of the European Commission conducted in collaboration with the National Centre for Research on Europe University of Canterbury between 2006-12. All projects used internationally-tested methodology of media, public opinion and elite opinion analysis pioneered by the Centre within the project "The EU in the Eyes of Asia-Pacific"(www.euperceptions.canterbury.ac.nz). Consistent methodology allows this volume to present a number of comparisons including longitudinal EU perceptions in Asia before and after the euro debt crisis, comparisons across individual countries in North, South and South-East Asia, as well as those between EU and Asian perceptions of each other. European and Asian scholars contributed to this volume, demonstrating synergies between academics from different disciplines and from the two continents in the field of EU-Asia relations.
