This book considers mainly etiology, pathogenesis, and pathophysiology of aortic aneurysms (AA) and aneurysm rupture and addresses anyone engaged in treatment and prevention of AA. Multiple factors are implicated in AA pathogenesis, and are outlined here in detail by a team of specialist researchers. Initial pathological events in AA involve recruitment and infiltration of leukocytes into the aortic adventitia and media, which are associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines, chemokine, and reactive oxygen species. AA development is characterized by elastin fragmentation. As the aorta dilates due to loss of elastin and attenuation of the media, the arterial wall thickens as a result of remodeling. Collagen synthesis increases during the early stages of aneurysm formation, suggesting a repair process, but resulting in a less distensible vessel. Proteases identified in excess in AA and other aortic diseases include matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), cathepsins, chymase and others. The elucidation of these issues will identify new targets for prophylactic and therapeutic intervention.

As life expectancy is extended, the incidence and occurrence of Aortic Aneurysms are becoming increasingly common. Until recently, the treatment of aortic disease was primarily surgical, carrying a high mortality rate among the high risk elderly population. In Aortic Aneurysms: Pathogenesis and Treatment, Gilbert R. Upchurch Jr., Enrique Criado, and a panel of distinguished physicians comprehensively assess the rapidly evolving field of aneurysm treatment, focusing on aneurysms of the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta. The discussion of Aortic Aneurysms covers endovascular aortic repair as well as the recent significant improvements in stent graft design. This volume provides a concise and authoritative view of the current state of patient management, serving as a primer on clinical care and surgical procedures for aortic aneurysms. Comprehensive and up-to-date, Aortic Aneurysms: Pathogenesis and Treatment, offers Cardiologists, Vascular Surgeons, and Thoracic and Cardiac Surgeons a multidisciplinary approach to the management and treatment of patients with aortic disease.

An aortic aneurysm is the dilation of the aorta to more than 1.5 times its normal size. It causes no symptoms except when it ruptures. Sometimes, it may result in leg, back or abdominal pain. Aortic rupture results in massive internal bleeding, which unless treated immediately, is fatal. Aortic aneurysms are of three types, classified on the basis of their location on the aorta - aortic root aneurysm, thoracic aortic aneurysm and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Aneurysms can be detected through physical examination. Medical imaging is required for confirming the diagnosis and determining the anatomic extent of the aneurysm. It can occur as a result of trauma or infection or an abnormality in the collagen and elastin components of the aortic wall. Open or endovascular surgery is the recommended treatment for an aortic aneurysm. For smaller aneurysms, blood pressure control, use of beta blockers and statins may be recommended. This book provides significant information on aortic aneurysms to help develop a good understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of this medical condition. Those with an interest in cardiology would find this book helpful.

This is the first textbook to focus on Aortopathy, a new clinical concept for a form of vasculopathy. The first section of the book starts from discussing general concept and history of Aortopathy, and then deals with its pathophysiology, manifestation, intrinsic factor, clinical implication, management and prevention. The second part closely looks at various disorders of the Aortopathy such as bicuspid aortic valve and coarctation of aorta. The book editors have published a lot of works on the topic and have been collecting relating data in the field of congenital heart disease for the past 20 years, thus present the book with confidence. The topic - an association of aortic pathophysiological abnormality, aortic dilation and aorto-left ventricular interaction - is getting more and more attention among cardiovascular physicians. This is the first book to refer for cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, ACHD specialists, etc. to acquire thorough knowledge on Aortopathy.
