Excerpt from Ethics, or Moral Philosophy It is the end of philosophy to show truth as coming from its first, most absolute, and most universal principles; and it is for ethics to explain the intrinsic and essential constituents of moral action in man, as naturally known to human reason. Among the subjects pertaining to ethics herein discussed, it was deemed expedient, in a work primarily intended for use where all citizens have some voice in political affairs, to examine the nature, properties, and scope of civil law and authority, at as great length as the limits of such a book could becomingly allow. Excerpt from Handbook of Moral Philosophy In its higher development, when dealing with relations tran scending the facts of experience, as when treating of our relations to the Absolute Being, Moral Philosophy becomes a Speculative Science. Any denial of a speculative branch of the science must rest on the denial of the need for a philo Sophy of the fact of man's existence. Download The Elements of Ethics Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Elements of Ethics: An Introduction to Moral Philosophy This manual has been written with a special View to the wants and difficulties of University Extension students, to whom, in the first instance, the sub stance of it was given in a course of lectures. Though attempting to deal with the most recent phases of ethical problems, it does not profess to treat them in an original manner, but merely to apply to their solution ideas which, owing to the labours of the best thinkers of our own time and country, are now common property. Those of my readers who are acquainted with the course of. Modern thought in the field of Moral Philosophy will readily recognise the debt I owe to Kant and Hegel in Germany, and their most distinguished exponents, T. H. Green, and Professor Edward Caird in Great Britain. For those who are as yet beginners in philosophy, my best hope in writing this manual will be realised if they are stimulated by it to apply themselves to these and other perennial sources of philosophic inspiration. Download Reason and Conduct Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Reason and Conduct: New Bearings in Moral Philosophy In arranging these essays, I have decided not to follow a strict chronological order. Instead, I have divided them into two main groups. The first represents my own successive efforts to find answers to the questions of analytical ethics. The second offers a selection of critical studies of particular works that reflect some of the prevailing winds of doctrine in contemporary moral philosophy and several essays dealing with a variety of topics, historical and substantive as well as methodological, which, at one time or another, have engaged my attention. Taken together, the papers do seem to me to provide a fairly comprehensive survey of a good many of the issues with which moral philosophers are now concerned. However, I most particularly desire not to give the impres sion that without really trying I have somehow managed to construct a new system of moral philosophy. These are new bearings, nothing more.
