Clear and illuminating commentary on one of Bodhidharma’s most important texts—designed to help Chan practitioners apply timeless and essential advice to their practice Legend has it that more than a thousand years ago an Indian Buddhist monk named Bodhidharma arrived in China. His approach to teaching was unlike that of any of the Buddhist missionaries who had come to China before him. He confounded the emperor with cryptic dialogues, traveled the country, lived in a cave in the mountains, and eventually paved the way for a unique and illuminating approach to Buddhist teachings that would later spread across the whole of East Asia in the form of Chan—later to be known as Seon in Korean, Thien in Vietnamese, and Zen in Japanese. This book, a translation and commentary on one of Bodhidharma’s most important texts, explores Bodhidharma’s revolutionary teachings in English. Guo Gu weaves his commentary through modern and relatable contexts, showing that this centuries-old wisdom is just as crucial for life now as it was when it first came to be. Masterfully translated and accompanied by helpful insights to supplement daily practice, The Essence of Chan is the perfect guide for those new to Chan, those returning, or those who have been practicing for years.

Grammy Award–winning gospel singer, television star, and radio host Erica Campbell speaks to women of all shapes and sizes, demonstrating that true beauty is found not in external appearances, but in celebrating the person God made you to be. So many young women struggle with issues of low self-esteem, depression, self-degradation, and other unhealthy habits that manifest on the outside what’s happening on the inside. And the rise of social media and the emphasis on beauty as validation for self-worth have only added fuel to the fire. But Erica Campbell—Grammy-winning gospel star, reality TV star, and nationally-syndicated radio host—believes that we need to redefine beauty. We need to start to see ourselves the way God sees us—beautiful and perfectly made. True beauty, Erica believes, is about embracing who God made you to be. In More Than Pretty, she turns the mirror around, reflecting God’s Word, His affirmations, and His design for every woman. This book explores issues of self-esteem, identity, and God’s design for love and intimacy. She is candid about her own struggles, sharing honestly about her battle to feel “good enough” in an industry that fixates on outward appearances. Covering topics such as being honest about who we truly are, reflecting on what we have internalized about our appearances, uncovering and exposing the plan of the Enemy, and accepting God’s will for your life, Erica offers thoughtful, hard-won wisdom and encouragement to women from all walks of life, helping build confidence in and through the power of God.

Strategy is the discipline that sits above all others. Strategy is about how to win. Strategy has the potential to lift us repeatedly and sustainably from the ugliness of a brute force world. I wrote this book because whilst strategy is incredibly important and powerful, it is almost always poorly understood, defined, articulated and executed. Enjoy.

An artisan perfumer reveals a lost art and its mysterious, sensual history. For centuries, people have taken what seems to be an instinctive pleasure in rubbing scents into their skin. Perfume has helped them to pray, to heal, and to make love. And as long as there has been perfume, there have been perfumers, or rather the priests, shamans, and apothecaries who were their predecessors. Yet, in many ways, perfumery is a lost art, its creative and sensual possibilities eclipsed by the synthetic ingredients of which contemporary perfumes are composed, which have none of the subtlety and complexity of essences derived from natural substances, nor their lush histories. Essence and Alchemy resurrects the social and metaphysical legacy that is entwined with the evolution of perfumery, from the dramas of the spice trade to the quests of the alchemists to whom today's perfumers owe a philosophical as well as a practical debt. Mandy Aftel tracks scent through the boudoir and the bath and into the sanctums of worship, offering insights on the relationship of scent to sex, solitude, and the soul. Along the way, she imparts instruction in the art of perfume compositions, complete with recipes, guiding the reader in a process of transformation of materials that continues to follow the alchemical dictum solve et coagula (dissolve and combine) and is itself aesthetically and spiritually transforming.

The literary task which he set before him was the interpretation in English verse of the life and philosophy of the East. The Light of Asia, subtitled The Great Renunciation, is in a form of a narrative poem. The book endeavors to describe the life and time of Prince Gautama Siddhartha, who after attaining enlightenment became The Buddha, The Awakened One. The book presents his life, character, and philosophy, in a series of verses. It is a free adaptation of the Lalitavistara. A few decades before the book's publication, very little was known outside Asia about the Buddha and Buddhism, the religion which he founded, and which had existed for about twenty-five centuries. Arnold's book was one of the first successful attempts to popularize Buddhism for a Western readership. The Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse Hindu scripture in Sanskrit that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Essence of Day is a study of ancient aromatic anointing oils, incense, plants and the Anointed One. This study explores how providing a fragrant offering was an important part of the Hebrew covenant worship. Aromas and herbs were used in conjunction with the seven most important holy days or festivals in Israel: 1) the Day of Rest (Shabbat); 2)the Festival of Unleavened Bread (Passover); 3) the presentation of the Torah (Shavuot) celebrated along with 4) the Festival of the Harvest (Feast of Weeks), that ends at Pentecost; 5) the Festival of Trumpets for the sounding of the New Year; 6) the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur); and the Festival of the Booths (Sukkot) celebrated with 7) the Festival of the First Fruits (first born). Plant compounds were used in the holy anointing oil and the holy incense which were required for covenant worship and were used in conjunction with: the Ark of the Covenant; the Lampstand; the Altar of Incense; the Table of the Bread of Presence; the Basin; and the Altar of Burnt Offering. This has been a thought-provoking study for me. It should have a positive impact on your understanding of the tabernacle (God's dwelling place) as well as the covenant law "as a copy and a shadow of heavenly things" (Hebrews 8:5 KJV). With a few exceptions, each chapter is titled after the name of a specific plant. In each chapter, the plant's properties are explored to show you how they address the human condition. When fragrance is included along with a Scripture story, you will find that it engages the senses, reinforces listening, increases receptivity, solidifies memory impression, and provides balm for your soul. Today, the study of aromatic plant compounds is called "aromatherapy," or aroma science. It is primarily carried out with essential oils, specifically when they are blended for a variety of reasons. The study of aromatherapy, defined by Annette Davis, president of the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA), states: "Aromatherapy is a part of a larger field called phytotherapy (plant therapy). True aromatherapy is the skilled use of genuine essential oils for therapeutic purposes. Science, education and experience allow aromatherapy to truly become a holistic art." Other experts quoted on NAHA.com include Robert Tisserand and Gabriel Mojay. According to Tisserand, Aromatherapy is beneficial "to restore balance to the mind, body and soul." Mojay states that Aromatherapy's purpose is "to maintain and promote physical, psychological and spiritual well being." This is an in-depth study of some of the plants which have been recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures, and which were used for covenant worship when aromatics had a defined role in the worship of Yahweh (which means "I-Am). I believe aromatics and the part of our brain that interprets smells (olfaction) were designed by our Creator so that men and women might connect to a basic human need - one that we cannot fully explain when we sense, seek out, and desire a relationship with our Creator God.
