Excerpt from Essays on Islamic Philosophy As an instance, if I were to assert that in Britain a Democratic system was utterly impossible, of what value would my statement be? Of no practical. Value at all, any more than a statement made a thousand years ago that, a Democratic system in France was utterly impossible would have had. Comte, in one of his addresses, saidz we might survey the stars and measure their distances, but to tell the actual chemical elements of which they are composed was a discovery which, though pregnant with interest for us, we can never hope to attain. Yet, at the time of his address, the investigations were being carried out that were to solve the problem. Those instances, mark you, are not parallels of Freeman's state ment, because there what was predicted as utterly impossible did actually occur but they show the absur dity of such statements. Excerpt from Essays on Islamic Philosophy In this short study of Islamic Philosophy I have only dealt with some of the leading features; being in Rangoon while the greater part of my library is in Belfast I have had to confine myself principally to the works mentioned in the text, to the writers of which I beg to acknowledge my indebtedness. Sketchy and all as it is I can only hope that in Islam it may create a renewed interest in the subject. If it should, I trust present day Muslims will not rest satisfied with the conclusions arrived at by their fathers, but remember that philosophy has been enriched since their time by generation after generation of further experiences, and been developed by a long line of earnest workers, and that it has been illuminated by the valuable and epoch-making discoveries and more reliable methods of modern science. This valuable reference work synthesizes and elucidates traditional themes and issues in Islamic philosophy as well as prominent topics emerging from the last twenty years of scholarship. Written for a wide readership of students and scholars, The Routledge Companion to Islamic Philosophy is unique in including coverage of both perennial philosophical issues in an Islamic context and also distinct concerns that emerge from Islamic religious thought. This work constitutes a substantial affirmation that Islamic philosophy is an integral part of the Western philosophical tradition. Featuring 33 chapters, divided into seven thematic sections, this volume explores the major areas of philosophy: Logic, Metaphysics, Philosophy in the Sciences, Philosophy of Mind/Epistemology, and Ethics/Politics as well as philosophical issues salient in Islamic revelation, theology, prophecy, and mysticism. Other features include: •A focus on both the classical and post-classical periods •A contributing body that includes both widely respected scholars from around the world and a handful of the very best younger scholars •"Reference" and "Further Reading" sections for each chapter and a comprehensive index for the whole volume The result is a work that captures Islamic philosophy as philosophy. In this way it serves students and scholars of philosophy and religious studies and at the same time provides valuable essays relevant to the study of Islamic thought and theology.
