Excerpt from Essays on Islamic Philosophy As an instance, if I were to assert that in Britain a Democratic system was utterly impossible, of what value would my statement be? Of no practical. Value at all, any more than a statement made a thousand years ago that, a Democratic system in France was utterly impossible would have had. Comte, in one of his addresses, saidz we might survey the stars and measure their distances, but to tell the actual chemical elements of which they are composed was a discovery which, though pregnant with interest for us, we can never hope to attain. Yet, at the time of his address, the investigations were being carried out that were to solve the problem. Those instances, mark you, are not parallels of Freeman's state ment, because there what was predicted as utterly impossible did actually occur but they show the absur dity of such statements. The articles in this volume are dedicated to Professor Ahmad Mahdavi Damghani for the breadth and depth of his interests and his influence on those interests. They attest to the fact that his fervor and rigorously surgical attention to detail have found fertile ground in a wide variety of disciplines, including (among others) Persian literature and philology; Islamic history and historiography; Arabic literature and philology; and Islamic philosophy and jurisprudence. The volume has brought together some of the most respected scholars in the fields of Islamic studies and Islamic literatures, all his prior students, to contribute with articles that touch on the fields Professor Mahdavi Damghani has so permanently touched with his astonishing scholarship and attention to detail.

Excerpt from Essays on Islamic Philosophy In this short study of Islamic Philosophy I have only dealt with some of the leading features; being in Rangoon while the greater part of my library is in Belfast I have had to confine myself principally to the works mentioned in the text, to the writers of which I beg to acknowledge my indebtedness. Sketchy and all as it is I can only hope that in Islam it may create a renewed interest in the subject. If it should, I trust present day Muslims will not rest satisfied with the conclusions arrived at by their fathers, but remember that philosophy has been enriched since their time by generation after generation of further experiences, and been developed by a long line of earnest workers, and that it has been illuminated by the valuable and epoch-making discoveries and more reliable methods of modern science. This volume focuses on Islamic philosophy of religion with a range of contributions from analytic perspectives. It opens with methodological discussions on the relationship between the history of Islamic philosophy and contemporary analytic philosophy. The book then offers a philosophical examination of some specific Islamic beliefs as well as some approaches to general beliefs that Islam shares with other religions. The chapters address a variety of topics from the existence and attributes of God through to debates on science and religion. The authors are predominantly scholars from Muslim backgrounds who tackle philosophical issues concerning Islam as their own living religion, representing internal perspectives that have never been vocal in analytic philosophy of religion so far. This is valuable reading for scholars and students of philosophy, theology, and religious studies.
