Excerpt from Epitaphs in the Old Burial Place, Dedham, Mass In every old Massachusetts town, among the localities of special interest, is the Spot where the early inhabitants committed to the earth the bodies of their lamented dead. Consecrated anew year after year by the tears of love and sorrow, it becomes hallowed ground; and as we bend over the low headstone and decipher its quaint inscription, we are reminded of the affection which erected it, and which still commends it to our respect and care. We are told by the humblest stone that a loved one had died, and that loving ones survived who desired to honor, and preserve, the memory of the dead. It is indeed a brief story; but it is a story which we love to read, though its age may be reckoned in centuries. So our old cemetery is a record of human affection well fitted to improve the heart and stir the imagination. It is not necessarily a gloomy spot. It Speaks rather of rest and peace after the labors and turmoil of life are ended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Epitaphs From the Old Burying Ground in Watertown I must also acknowledge here my indebtedness to Francis Bigelow, Esq. Who placed at my disposal, for comparison, his own very beautifully executed copy of the epitaphs, made by him in 1867. It will be seen that the general arrangement of the work is alphabetical. For strictly genealogical purposes this is undoubtedly more useful than the chronological plan adopted in the Cambridge Epitaphs. The oldest stone in the ground is that of sarah hammond, bearing date of 1674. This, with one or two others here, as many more in the old ground at Cambridge, and still more in Charlestown, Copp's Hill and Chapel Grounds in Boston, were without doubt cut in this country, and by one indi vidual. Periods, in these cases, separate the words, and deeply cut horizon tal marks separate the different lines of the epitaph. The letters are all cap itals. The stone of hannah coolidge, 1680, bears a winged skull, a fashion which almost universally prevailed from about this time to near the close of the last century. Nearly all the stones in this ground are so ornamented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Epitaphs From the Cemetery on Worcester Common How many inscriptions have been wholly lost by the destruction of many of the grave-stones themselves, cannot now be ascertained. At all events, to judge from the number of fragments of these stones found near the School Houses on our Worcester Common, it would seem that the hands of Time had not obliterated more of these memorials of the dead, than the hands of Youth had destroyed. However, the present collee tion will serve as a faithful record, it is hoped, of the monuments that were found in 1846, still unbroken and undisturbed. A few have been removed recently by friends, and the inscriptions of several, which were found some time since by J. Harrington, Esq. Of this city, have been obligingly furnished us for an Appendix.
