The U.S. Air Force sponsored a national conference on the Occupational Health Aspects of Advanced Composite Materials in the Aerospace Industry, 6-9 February 1989, in Dayton, Ohio. The conference was developed in cooperation with the Suppliers of Advanced Composite Materials Association (SACMA) and the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). It was attended by over 230 representatives from the Department of Defense and the Service Components, industry, labor, and other Federal agencies. The goals of the conference were to promote technology transfer and to provide a forum for discussion to determine: What is known and, possibly more importantly, what is not known about the health effects of composites. Availability and effectiveness of current controls in preventing worker illness. The need for epidemiologic studies on the health effects of composite materials. The availability of health information to the worker in the form of training and hazard communication. The overall conclusion is that while there are some health problems associated with the use of these materials, the problems are neither unique to these materials nor the aerospace industry, and the problems are solvable with current technology. The report on the conference is provided in two volumes. Volume I: Executive Summary includes summaries of the major issues addressed by the conference along with abstracts of the technical presentations. Volume II: Proceedings provides the full text of the presentations. Keywords: Advanced composite materials; Composite materials; Fibers; Industrial hygiene; Methylenedianiline; Prepregs; Resins.
