The Clean Coal Technology (CCT) Demonstration Program is a government and industry co-funded effort to demonstrate a new generation of innovative coal utilization processes in a series of facilities built across the country. These projects are carried out on a commercial scale to prove technical feasibility and provide the information required for future commercial applications. The goal of the CCT Program is to furnish the marketplace with a number of advanced, more efficient coal-based technologies that meet strict environmental standards. These technologies minimize the economic and environmental barriers that limit the full utilization of coal. Beginning in 1985, a multi-phased effort consisting of five separate solicitations was administered by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory. The CCT Program has successfully demonstrated a number of coal utilization technologies that are being applied commercially with beneficial results to the environment and increased efficiency in the use of energy.

Concern over the effects of airborne pollution, green house gases, and the impact of global warming has become a worldwide issue that transcends international boundaries, politics, and social responsibility. The 2nd Edition of Coal Energy Systems: Clean Coal Technology describes a new generation of energy processes that sharply reduce air emissions and other pollutants from coal-burning power plants. Coal is the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. When burned, it produces emissions that contribute to global warming, create acid rain, and pollute water. With all of the interest and research surrounding nuclear energy, hydropower, and biofuels, many think that coal is finally on its way out. However, coal generates half of the electricity in the United States and throughout the world today. It will likely continue to do so as long as it's cheap and plentiful [Source: Energy Information Administration]. Coal provides stability in price and availability, will continue to be a major source of electricity generation, will be the major source of hydrogen for the coming hydrogen economy, and has the potential to become an important source of liquid fuels. Conservation and renewable/sustainable energy are important in the overall energy picture, but will play a lesser role in helping us satisfy our energy demands today. Dramatically updated to meet the needs of an ever changing energy market, Coal Energy Systems, 2nd Edition is a single source covering policy and the engineering involved in implementing that policy. The book addresses many coal-related subjects of interest ranging from the chemistry of coal and the future engineering anatomy of a coal fired plant to the cutting edge clean coal technologies being researched and utilized today. A 50% update over the first edition, this new book contains new chapters on processes such as CO2 capture and sequestration, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems, Pulverized-Coal Power Plants and Carbon Emission Trading. Existing materials on worldwide coal distribution and quantities, technical and policy issues regarding the use of coal, technologies used and under development for utilizing coal to produce heat, electricity, and chemicals with low environmental impact, vision for utilizing coal well into the 21st century, and the security coal presents. Clean Liquids and Gaseous Fuels from Coal for Electric Power Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems Pulverized-Coal Power Plants Advanced Coal-Based Power Plants Fluidized-Bed Combustion Technology CO2 capture and sequestration

Coal is the least clean fossil fuel with respect to both local and global environment issues. Coal has played a huge role in a nation's development and continues to be important in the success of the Chinese economy. Similar to the way fossil fuels powered the industrial Revolution, coal has fueled recent development due to its vast reserves. The environmental impacts include those of the mining industry and coal transportation - on the landscape, rivers, water tables and other environmental media. This book, however, focuses on the impact of coal combustion on air quality and greenhouse gas concentrations. Clean Coal Engineering Technology This section describes on-going collaborative efforts on clean coal technologies, including research, development and demonstration and information exchange, policy collaboration and the role of professional associations. It also addresses many coal-related subjects of interest ranging from the chemistry of coal and the future engineering anatomy of a coal fired plant to the cutting edge clean coal technologies being researched and utilized today. This book describes a new generation of energy processes that sharply reduce air emissions and other pollutants from coal-burning power plants. The book also provides significant information on the major power generation technologies that aim to utilize coal more efficiently, and with less environmental impact. Increased coal combustion concerns about coal's impacts on human health and climate change, so the book covers the reduction of both carbon footprints and emissions of pollutants, such as particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and mercury. This book will serve as valued guide for Power Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Energy Engineers, Energy Economist, Environmental Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and Industrial Engineers, as well as for researchers and practitioners.

The energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables will safeguard the environment. The energy production from coal-fired power station accounts to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It is urgent for the energy sector to become innovative to tackle climate change. The world coal reserves are paramount for energy security. Coal-generated electricity is still a dominant source of energy around the world, and it is believed that coal-generated energy will remain part of the global energy mix in the near future. In a short- and long-term, energy policy frameworks need to embrace and support clean coal technologies through expanded research and development investment primarily to mitigate climate change and guarantee environmental protection. This chapter explores green and emerging clean coal technologies (CCTs). It builds a case for investment in innovative green technologies to support cleaner environment. This study recommends a holistic approach; thus, while nations safeguard socioeconomic interests, economic competitiveness, investment in feasibility and adaptability of clean coal technologies should be gradually implemented. The commitment to climate change mitigation is paramount for sustainable growth and environmental preservation.
