We examine how individual entrepreneurial orientation dimensions influence the relationship between competitive strategy and firm performance. The findings, based on a data set of 115 entrepreneurial firms, show the different impacts that the individual dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation have on competitive advantage as well as the different effects the two generic types of competitive advantage (cost leadership and differentiation) have on performance. Innovativeness is the most robust variable influencing differentiation and firm performance. Risk taking and competitive aggressiveness negatively influence both generic strategies. Overall, this study refines our understanding of the effects of entrepreneurial orientation on firm performance.

Entrepreneurship is a powerful attitude that, in such a way, in the last few years, has become a discipline increasingly transversal to different areas of knowledge. Many times, we think about the things we want such as a good house, a brand new car, a beautiful relationship, a good friendship, and a good way to be in the world. Is that possible that you convert into an entrepreneur? This book shows some examples of that possibility, from simple people to a big organization. In all cases, if you become an entrepreneur, it will be for your taste and pleasure, a means to survive and enjoy the uncertainty, and rejoice that you have all these in your hands and will. Can you find out the trends and overcome the challenges? We would say yes. It all depends on whether you want to develop and apply this attitude.

New business creation is essential for our nation's economy and accounts for all net new job creation. However, 56% of small businesses fail within four years of startup. One way to address this issue is to employ an approach combining an entrepreneurial orientation (EO) with key strategic management planning practices for firms seeking to gain a competitive advantage and improve firm performance. Entrepreneurial orientation is the propensity of firms to be innovative, proactive, and be willing to take risks. This research project empirically investigated the relationship among a firm's scanning intensity, locus of planning, planning flexibility and entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance. The sample for this research involved the owners and principal managers of Northeastern Ohio small businesses. Results indicate that a firm's entrepreneurial orientation is positively related to firm performance. However, the positive relationship between strategic planning processes and firm performance was not supported. Environmental uncertainty was shown to have an effect on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance.

This book explores the relationship between families, firms, and regions and the extent to which these relationships contribute to regional economic and social development. Although family business participation in economic activities has been a common phenomenon since pre-industrial societies, and its importance has evolved throughout time and across spatial contexts, the book suggests that these factors have often been neglected in family business and regional studies. Taking this research gap into account, the book aims to deepen our understanding of the role family firms play in the regional economy. In particular, it explores two seldom studied questions. Firstly, what role do family firms play in regional development? Secondly, how do different spatial regional contexts shape family firm operations and performance? Family Business and Regional Development presents a model of "spatial familiness" and uses themes such as productivity, networks and competitiveness to shed new light on family businesses. Moreover, it approaches the juxtaposition between family business and regional studies to encourage the cross-fertilisation of ideas, theories, and research methods between the two fields. Bringing together leading experts in entrepreneurship, regional economics, and economic geography, this book will be a valuable reading for advanced students, researchers and policymakers interested in family firms, regional studies and economic geography.

The research on entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is undecided as to whether a specific EO improves firm performance. We considered EO in a different light by examining the role of emergent strategy. By considering entrepreneurial orientation as it is effected by emergent strategy, we found a positive relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance. Using Mintzberg's theory of emergent strategy, we investigated and found a negative moderating effect of emergent strategy on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance. We tested these hypotheses using data of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from Mexico.
