Community participation is vital for the success of any rural development project. Under the conservancy wildlife management strategy, commercial farmers come together to manage wildlife jointly to generate income through wildlife tourism. The economic benefits generated must be shared with the impoverished surrounding communities. The rural districts can purchase wildlife and place them in the conservancy and they will be managed just as the concervancys own animals are managed. The districts will get profit from the animals they own. Wildlife management industry, if put to good use, has a greater potential to meaningfully increase the prosperity of the people of the neigbouring communal areas than any other land use option.The communities surrounding the conservancies must participate meaningfully in the management of wildlife to make the project a success. Once the local communites feel sidelined in the utilization of wildlife resources it will lead to conflict. Such conflict could possibly be resolved through joint management of the resource. Pacific Island Countries have been shown to be especially vulnerable to such external influences as natural disasters, political unrest and downturns in the global economy and their tourism industries have been notably affected. In particular, they typically have a narrow resource base and a fragile and often vulnerable natural environment. While there is some research on islands and small states, there is a dearth of information on the South Pacific and very little research is being undertaken in the region compared to other geographical regions in the world. This volume brings together current work in Pacific Island tourism. In this collection, three main themes arise: Images of the South Pacific; Socio-economic Impacts of Tourism; and Pacific Island Countries and the Outside World. The first focus is on the question of image, namely, stereotypes of a destination held by tourists and potential tourists, the extent to which residents, for their part, really welcome visitors, and the role tourism might play in changing pre-established images. The second theme is tourism's impacts, notably the economic and socio-cultural effects of international tourism's intrusion in the region which, though often hotly debated, have attracted relatively little empirical research. The third focus is on the challenges of how PICs articulate with their external geo-political and physical environment. These involve existing relations with formal colonial centres, geographical isolation, the need for greater air access to the outside world and for more tourists, and the continuing threat to several PICs of global warming, which increased air travel will inevitably exacerbate. This research goes beyond the traditionally studied intricacies and contentions within northern Tanzania's community-based conservation by looking at how the state's engagement, through wildlife tourism, with local communities in and around protected areas impacts the country's development and conservation of its wildlife. It draws heavily on Tanzania's Development Vision 2025 and how the wildlife tourism industry feeds into achieving its objectives. This research looks through the theoretical lens of political ecology, the theory of access, and the powers of exclusion. It applies a qualitative content analysis by coding different types of existing literature in NVivo, and includes semi-structured interviews with key respondents. The research concludes that the government's recentralization of wildlife management is working opposite to its development ambitions as per Vision 2025, and it is doing very little to address the crisis within its ecosystems and to enhance wildlife conservation. Ultimately, it is through the government's efforts to protect Tanzania's ecological uniqueness that both conservation and development have faced increased challenges in its efforts to improve.

This volume discusses the complex relationship between Protected Areas and tourism and their impact on community livelihoods in a range of countries in Southern Africa. Protected areas and tourism have an enduring and symbiotic relationship.
