Until recently grammars of English have received surprisingly little scholarly attention, while a lot of research is done on dictionaries. It appears, however, that learners of English shy away from modern grammars and prefer to consult dictionaries or traditional reference grammars instead. This raises questions as to the relationship between theoretical linguistics and grammar writing and calls for more research into this area, especially for the period from 1800 onwards, which was crucial for the development of grammatical thinking and its acceptance (or rejection) at all educational levels today. This volume brings together work from international experts on the historiography of English grammar writing who deal with a variety of topics grouped into three overlapping sections: I. Native Grammars of English, II. Non-native Grammars of English, and III. Grammatical Analyses. The volume includes summaries of the articles and a name index.

Writing in response to an observed need for a short, simplified summary of traditional (or classical) grammar, Jewell A. Friend in this exceptionally lucid presentation dispels many of the mysteries and misconceptions surrounding a complex subject. The book provides students with a thorough grounding for further inquiry into modern descriptive linguistic analysis of present-day American English, and makes clear the distinctions between the typical "schoolroom grammars" and the scientifically developed methodologies of the classical linguists. Dividing her analysis into two main parts, Ms. Friend provides a brief description of classical grammar and an explanation of the traditionalist concepts of meaning, sentence types, and clauses. In the second part, she gives descriptions of nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, articles, and conjunctions. Numerous examples and exercises to test the student's grasp of the material presented are included throughout, and an exceptionally detailed glossary of linguistic terms is furnished. This brief volume which concisely presents the principles of traditional grammar will prove especially useful both as text and reference to students and teachers.

Publisher description: This book presents a new and comprehensive descriptive grammar of English, written by the principal authors in collaboration with an international research team of a dozen linguists in five countries. It represents a major advance over previous grammars by virtue of drawing systematically on the linguistic research carried out on English during the last forty years. It incorporates insights from the theoretical literature but presents them in a way that is accessible to readers without formal training in linguistics. It is based on a sounder and more consistent descriptive framework than previous large-scale grammars, and includes much more explanation of grammatical terms and concepts, together with justification for the ways in which the analysis differs from traditional grammar. The book contains twenty chapters and a guide to further reading. Its usefulness is enhanced by diagrams of sentence structure, cross-references between sections, a comprehensive index, and user-friendly design and typography throughout.
