This edited volume is dedicated to the exploration of English language acquisition and development outside of the largely monolingual environments of North America, the United Kingdom and Australia. Specifically, the studies investigate different facets of English language learning in Singapore, and uses this experience to forge connections with other New English contexts. Using empirical data drawn from a range of language classrooms, the contributors emphasise the place of education within a global framework of English language learning. In so doing they examine economic, social and political factors influencing language education, and present a refreshingly global perspective on English language acquisition. This comprehensive examination of language learning in New English contexts will be of interest to researchers in applied linguistics and world Englishes.

International students in North American seminaries struggling with academic work in English ... Seminary students around the world finding resource materials that are still only available in English ... Regional seminaries in Asia, Africa, and Europe educating people from many language backgrounds by offering instruction in English ... These and other factors are the primary reasons for this volume. Trends in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) have led to specialized English and pedagogy for areas such as business, engineering, hospitality, and so on. The time has come to acknowledge English for Bible and Theology, along with specialized program design, materials, and instruction. English Language Teaching in Theological Contexts explores various models for assisting seminary and Bible college students in learning English while also engaging in their theological coursework. It features chapters by specialists from countries including the U.S., Brazil, Ukraine, India, the Philippines, and Korea. Part one of the book presents language teaching challenges and solutions in various places; part two focuses on specific resources to inspire readers to develop their own materials

This book analyzes the impact of historical, political and sociocultural contexts on the reading, rewriting and translating of texts. The authors base their arguments on their experiences of translating or researching different text types, taking in fiction, short stories, memoirs, religious texts, scientific treatises, and news reports from a variety of different languages and cultural traditions. In doing so they cover a wide range of contexts and time periods, including Early Modern Europe, post-1848 Switzerland, nineteenth-century Portugal, Egypt in the early twentieth century under British colonial rule, Spain under Franco’s dictatorship, and contemporary Peru and China. They also consider the theoretical and pedagogical implications of their conclusions for translation students and practitioners. This edited collection will be of great interest to scholars working in translation studies, applied linguistics, and on issues of cultural difference.
