Excerpt from English Meditative Lyrics N the treatise before us we shall purposely confine ourselves to the domain of British or English lyrics, as distinct from American, these latter hav ing already been studied by us in a volume which may be best regarded as a companion of the one now presented.* So broad and rich is, this lyric area, even within the specific province of the medi tative, that we cannot hope to compass the en tire list of representative names, but must content ourselves with a limited portion of it. We must, moreover, be satisfied with brief citations and sug gestions, making no attempt whatever at elaborate discussion. Few topics within the sphere of literary study impress us as more inviting and recompen sing, especially so to those of contemplative habit, and who feel at home in that quiet and still air of delightful studies of which the meditative Mil ton speaks. This volume will have accomplished its object if by it the reader is enriched and quick enedin spirit, and led to seek for further treasure in this open mine of lyric wealth. T. W. H. Modern readers can sometimes be unsure about the language and the literary conventions of medieval and Renaissance verse--lyrical works written at a time before poetry was assumed to be about personal expression. This readers' guide introduces to a 21st century audience some of the greatest masterpieces of English poetry spanning five centuries. Focusing on poems by Chaucer, Wyatt, Shakespeare, Milton and others, the author discusses the development of poetic technique, explains the rhetorical culture of earlier centuries and describes the various lyric forms--including lover's complaints, sonnets and elegies--that poets used to communicate with readers.

Excerpt from The Lost Art of Meditation Haste and worry are anything but helpful to that purest devotion and loftiest thought which are essential in the making of char acter. He who sees God's mountains from the window of the speeding express train, or from the thronging streets of mountain cities, will never see their real glory. One must stand alone in the vast solitudes surrounded by snow-capped giants and let the mountains grow on him to experience the soul touch of majesty. And he who would know God must be much alone with God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
