Excerpt from English Literature The writer of this volume has tried to furnish students and general readers with a clear and concise account of English literature and its makers from the beginnings to the present day. The influences of social and other movements on literary develop ment have been brought out in the brief introductions to the chapters. The biographies set forth the important facts of the authors' careers without extensive comment. This is in accord with the present writer's conviction that much ready-made inter pretation of conditions and motives, after the setting of an author's work and his characteristics have been made clear, is a hindrance rather than a help to students. Since literature is in a peculiar sense an expression of personality, an attempt has been made to sum up the personal traits of each prominent author in a para. Graph or two. Wherever an author's contribution has proved epoch-making in literary history, that fact is given special promi nence in a final summary. Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has therefore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge possessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. The main criterion which has regulated the selection of names is public fame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Masters of English Literature An Introductory chapter is included so as to present a very brief survey of the whole field of English literature At the end of each chapter there is a list of books and magazine articles. It is hoped that these reference lists will be especially helpful to those who wish to make a fuller study of the author. Instead of inserting separate chapters on the literary movements and tendencies of the age, I have included such matter in the body of the biographical and critical comment on each author. Excerpt from The Beginnings of English Literature The only satisfactory way to teach English literature to beginners is to put the literature itself in their hands, and try to aid them in getting an intelligent appreciation of it. The study of literary evolutions is important even at first, but only in so far as it is an aid to such appreciation. It is especially desirable that the student should not think of the study of the poets, for example, as consisting chiefly in the study of what other people have written about them. Yet it is hardly practicable to dispense with the textbook altogether. The earliest authors that have usually been read by the under-classmen in Yale College, for example, are Spenser and Shakespeare. The writers who cannot be enjoyed without some preliminary linguistic study have been reserved for a later place in the curriculum; but ever Spenser and Shakespeare, and their period, can best be taken up after at least a slight knowledge of the earlier history of our literature has been acquired. This book has been written to supply what the author's experience has shown to be a real need. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of English Literature The earliest literature of this country was not written by the English people. Before our forefathers came over from the north of Germany, there was a people living in this island called the Kelts; and the remains of this race are still dwelling amongst us in the north of Scotland, in Ireland, and in Wales. The Kelts were divided into two great families - the Gaels, whose descendants are living in the Highlands and in Ireland, and the Cymri, who were the forefathers of the Welsh. All the Kelts have much power of imagination, and a keen sense of what is beautiful both in nature and life; they have quick feelings also, which are easily stirred to strong emotion, though there is a difference between the Gael and the Cymri in this respect, for while the Gael like to be moved to laughter and joy by what is lively and bright, the Cymri love to be touched to tears by what is pathetic and mournful; but both the Gael and the Cymri are readily stirred to intense enthusiasm by a heroic story of brave deeds and resolute conflict. If we were asked, what form of literature would such a race produce? we might answer at once - poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
