Excerpt from Old English Libraries: The Making, Collection, and Use of Books During the Middle Ages With the arrangement and equipment of libraries this essay has little to do: the ground being already covered adequately by Dr. Clark in his admirable monograph on The Care of Books. Herein is described the making, use, and circulation of books considered as a means of literary culture. It seemed possible to throw a useful sidelight on literary history, and to introduce some human interest into the study of bibliography, if the place held by books in the life of the Middle Ages could be indicated. Such, at all events, was my aim, but I am far from sure of my success in carrying it out; and I offer this book merely as a discursive and popular treatment of a subject which seems to me of great interest. The book has suffered from one unhappy circumstance. It was planned in collaboration with my friend Mr. James Hutt, M.A., but unfortunately, owing to a breakdown of health, Mr. Hutt was only able to help me in the composition of the chapter on the Libraries of Oxford, which is chiefly his work. Had it been possible for Mr. Hutt to share all the labour with me, this book would have been put before the public with more confidence. Excerpt from A List of Private Book Collectors in the United States and Canada, With Mention of "Hobbies" Other collections with the same strong theological flavor were owned by Parson Hooker who left behind him £300 worth of books in an estate of Parson Wareham, £82 worth in an estate of and Rev. Ebenezer Pemberton, whose books numbering lots, were described in the first auction catalogue compiled in New England. In nearly all of the libraries of the seventeenth century the ancient Classics - Latin and Greek were well represented while little attention was given to English literature. Of all of the libraries of the early religious leaders that of Cotton Mather, characterized by Dunton as the glory of New England, was the largest and most valuable. It consisted of over printed volumes and contained many manuscripts and its value was estimated at The majority of these volumes, like the smaller libraries of Harvard and Brewster, were of a religious, theological and philosophical character. Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal.
