Anthropologists and other social scientists from the US and Latin America look at physical evidence for the resistance of Native Americans first against Spanish conquest, and later against occupation and domination during the centuries of colonial rule. Their topics include Juan Pardo and the shrinking of Spanish Le Florida 1566-1568, producing early colonial hybridity at a doctrina in highland Peru, the multiple roles of early colonial red wares in the basin of Mexico, and the archaeology of indigenous heritage at Spanish colonial military settlements. The essays are from a short seminar in November 2008. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

This book is the culmination of 15 years of research and travels that have taken the author completely around the world twice, as well as on other travels in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and around the Pacific rim. Its purpose has been to try to understand the role of cultural differences within nations and between nations, today and over centuries of history, in shaping the economic and social fates of peoples and of whole civilizations. Focusing on four major cultural areas(that of the British, the Africans (including the African diaspora), the Slavs of Eastern Europe, and the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere -- Conquests and Cultures reveals patterns that encompass not only these peoples but others and help explain the role of cultural evolution in economic, social, and political development.

Contemporary political theory has experienced a recent revival of an old idea: that of community. In Liberalism and Community, Steven Kautz explores the consequences of this renewed interest for liberal politics. Whereas communitarian critics argue that liberalism is both morally and politically deficient because it does not adequately account for equality and virtue, Kautz defends liberalism by presenting reports of various partisan quarrels among liberals (who love liberty), democrats (who love equality), and republicans (who love virtue). Founded on the classic texts of Locke and Montesquieu, the liberalism that Kautz advocates is cautious and conservative. He defends it against the arguments of important new communitarians--Richard Rorty, Michael Walzer, Benjamin Barber, and Michael Sandel--and contrasts communitarian and liberal views on key questions. He discusses Walzer' s account of moral reasoning in a democratic community, engages Barber on the nature and limits of republican community, and takes on Rorty's communitarian account of moral psychology and the nature of the self. Kautz also explores the concepts of virtue, tolerance, and patriotism--issues of particular interest to communitarians which pose special problems for liberal political theory--in an effort to rebuild a new and more tenable interpretation of liberal rationality.

Just over a sixth of the world's population subscribes to the Muslim belief that `there is no god but God, and Muhammad is his Messenger'. Michael Cook gives an incisive account of the man who inspired this faith, drawing on the traditional Muslim sources to describe Muhammad's life and teaching. He also attempts to stand back from this traditional picture to question how far it is historically justified.
