In this paper we investigate the problem of selecting the best logistic population from k(greater than or equal 2) possible candidates. The selected population must also be better than a given control. We employ the empirical Bayes approach and develop a selection procedure. The performance (rate of convergence) of the proposed selection rule is also analyzed. We also carry out a simulation study to investigate the rate of convergence of the proposed empirical Bayes selection procedure. The results of simulation are provided in the paper.

The problem of selecting good ones compared with a control from k(greater than or equal to 2) positive exponential family populations is considered in this paper. A nonparametric empirical Bayes approach is used to construct the selection procedures. It has been shown that the risks of the empirical Bayes procedures converge to the (minimum) Bayes risk with a rate of O(1/n), where n is the number of accumulated past observations at hand. Simulations were carried out to study the performance of the procedures for small to moderate values of n. The results of this study are provided in the paper.

At the International Indian Statistical Association Conference, held at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, participants focused on advancements in theory and methodology of probability and statistics. This is one of two volumes containing invited papers from the meeting. The 32 chapters deal with different topics of interest, including stochastic processes and inference, distributions and characterizations, inference, Bayesian inference, selection methods, regression methods, and methods in health research. The text is ideal for applied mathematicians, statisticians, and researchers in the field.

Shanti S. Gupta has made pioneering contributions to ranking and selection theory; in particular, to subset selection theory. His list of publications and the numerous citations his publications have received over the last forty years will amply testify to this fact. Besides ranking and selection, his interests include order statistics and reliability theory. The first editor's association with Shanti Gupta goes back to 1965 when he came to Purdue to do his Ph.D. He has the good fortune of being a student, a colleague and a long-standing collaborator of Shanti Gupta. The second editor's association with Shanti Gupta began in 1978 when he started his research in the area of order statistics. During the past twenty years, he has collaborated with Shanti Gupta on several publications. We both feel that our lives have been enriched by our association with him. He has indeed been a friend, philosopher and guide to us.
