Several long-term trends in technology evolution have become apparent since these symposia began in 1989. Earlier presenters more frequently discussed treatment methods involving harsh and extensive human intervention. As the symposia have continued, the number of presentations describing extremely harsh and expensive treatment technologies have gradually been supplanted by more subtle and gentler methods. Such methods include subsurface-engineered barriers, phytoremediation, and bioremediation. Nineteen manuscripts were selected for inclusion in this volume, based upon peer review, scientific merit, the editors' perceptions of lasting value or innovative features, and the general applicability of either the technology itself or the scientific methods and scholarly details provided by the authors. General topics include: soil treatment, groundwater treatment, and radioactive waste treatment.

Based on a symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia in October 1991, this volume is both an introduction to hazardous waste treatment for the novice and a reference for the technical expert. Specialists in emerging technologies for treating and managing gaseous, liquid, and solid wastes contribute 22 chapters arranged within five sections: physical and chemical wastewater treatment, biological treatment, soil remediation and treatment, treatment of volatile compounds, and selected mixed-waste treatment applications. This new volume describes developing technologies for treating and managing wastewaters and solid residues, such as soils and incinerator ashes, that are contaminated. It includes chapters on such diverse topics as municipal solid wastes, water purification by radiation, the isolation of organic species and inorganic radionuclides, and solvent recycling. Several chapters cover radiolysis chemistry in dilute aqueous media, solar treatment, chemical separations, the biological and chemical treatment of soils and sludges, and solids immobilization. This volume is a useful introduction to hazardous waste treatment for the novice as well as a valuable reference for the technical expert.
