Martha Finley's 'Elsie's Widowhood' is a poignant continuation of the beloved 'Elsie Dinsmore' series, focusing on the trials and tribulations faced by the titular character after the death of her beloved husband. The narrative beautifully combines elements of Victorian sentimentalism with moral lessons, making it a classic example of 19th-century children's literature. Through Elsie's experiences as a widow, the book explores themes of grief, resilience, and the importance of family bonds. Finley's descriptive prose and engaging storytelling style captivate readers, drawing them into Elsie's emotional journey. Martha Finley, a devout Christian and schoolteacher, drew inspiration from her own religious beliefs and upbringing when writing the 'Elsie Dinsmore' series, imparting moral lessons and values to her readers. Her deep empathy and understanding of human nature are evident in her characterizations and plot development, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. Finley's personal experiences and religious convictions shine through in 'Elsie's Widowhood,' enriching the reader's understanding of the characters and their motivations. I highly recommend 'Elsie's Widowhood' to readers seeking a touching and morally uplifting story that delves into the complexities of grief and resilience. Martha Finley's masterful storytelling and meaningful themes make this book a timeless addition to any library, appealing to both children and adults alike.

Edward and Elsie's daughter, young Elsie, is saddened by a separation from her beloved Lester, who is studying art in Italy. Shortly after Lester leaves for Europe, the family is devastated by Edward's sudden death. Elsie finds solace in the comfort of her father, Horace Dinsmore, and, more important, in the everlasting arms of her heavenly Father. The knowledge that Edward is in heaven with loved ones who have gone before is a great consolation to the Travilla family, but they struggle nonetheless to deal with the loss of husband and father.

The Elsie Dinsmore Novels, Martha Finley, in our opinion is the author of the best Series of novels that we have seen in our forty-three years of reviewing. Written by Martha Finley, an unmarried teacher of the last century, these novels proved to be a means of conveying her deep love for Christ Jesus. She loved her Lord, she loved His Word, and this love was passed on to His sheep through the writing of by far the best and most Biblical novels you will ever read or see. Altogether there are 28 of these novels, all built around Elsie Dinsmore, her immediate family, her extended family, and her neighbors.

Martha Finley (April 26, 1828 - January 30, 1909)was a teacher and author of numerous works, the most well known being the 28 volume Elsie Dinsmore series which was published over a span of 38 years. The daughter of Presbyterian minister Dr. James Brown Finley and his wife and cousin Maria Theresa Brown Finley, she was born on April 26, 1828, in Chillicothe, Ohio. Finley wrote many of her books under the pseudonym Martha Farquharson. She died in 1909 in Elkton, Maryland, where she moved in 1876... Elsie Dinsmore is a children's book series written by Martha Finley (1828-1909) between 1867 and 1905. An adapted version has been published, but it leaves out several of the most important facts and details.Later in Elsie's life, the books focus less on Elsie herself, and mostly deal with Lulu's constant conflict with her fearful temper. When Violet is first married to Lulu's father Captain Raymond, Lulu creates a problem by refusing to obey her new mother. Another time, she hurts and nearly kills her baby sister, causing her father to beat her with a riding whip. When Lulu attends school in Louisiana, her music instructor taps her with a ruler, causing her to strike him over the head with a book. When Lulu refuses to comply with Mr. Dinsmore's order that she go back to the signor, Lulu holds out, causing her to be cut off from the family circle. Her bad behavior causes Rosie to sympathize with her sister Vi for having such burdens, and Rosie often teases Lulu into a passion.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside: Had she not a better than an earthly love to cheer, comfort, and sustain her on her way?-a love that would never fail, a Friend who would never leave nor forsake her; whose sympathy was perfect; who was always touched with the feeling of her infirmities, and into whose ear she could ever whisper her every sorrow, perplexity, anxiety, certain of help; for His love and power were infinite. ...Thank you, Isa, said Calhoun, following her from the room, for she had risen from the table with her last words; my mother does not seem to comprehend the difference between our circumstances and those of some of our relatives, and I am sure has no idea of the pain her words sometimes give to grandpa, Art, and myself. ...[37] Ah, there was in each young heart an unspoken fear that he would never rise from that couch of pain, for they had seemed to read his doom in the grave, anxious faces of grandfather and physicians; but oh it was too terrible a fear for either to put into words even to her own consciousness! ...My son, she said with an affectionate look into the earnest face of the pleader, I am glad to see your sympathy and love for your brother, but I think your grandpa loves him quite as well and knows far better what is for his good, and I cannot interfere between them; my children must all be as obedient and submissive to my father as they are to me. ...My dear child, Elsie said, in tones as tender and compassionate as she would have used to one of her own darlings, and laying her hand affectionately on the young girls shoulder, I do not like to see you so hard at work while every one else is out enjoying this delightful weather.
