Perhaps nowhere in the Kansas City community does the Kansas City story unfold more poignantly than in the life stories of the people buried in historic Elmwood Cemetery. These people, and their counterparts who rest in other burial grounds in Greater Kansas City, are the individuals who gave us the Kansas City Spirit. Elmwood Cemetery: Stories of Kansas City will take you on a rich journey of discovery as the authors ... some two dozen community leaders recruited by professional photographer and Elmwood Cemetery trustee Bruce Mathews ... bring to life the stories of people who made Kansas City a thriving, diverse community, with respect for the past and an eye toward the future. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Elmwood Cemetery was founded in 1872 at 4900 Truman Road in Kansas City, Mo. Its beautiful grounds, designed by noted landscape architect George Kessler, are a repository for some 36,000 souls some famous, some infamous, some altogether unknown. Their stories trace Kansas City from its earliest days as a frontier town, through boom years when railroads first rumbled across the Missouri River, and into the 20th century, when stockyards flourished and downtown buildings muscled their way onto the skyline. Featuring the photography of Bruce Mathews. Foreword by Adele Hall. Royalty proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to the Elmwood Cemetery Society.

Elmwood Cemetery was founded in August 1852 by 50 prominent Memphians who resolved to create a new burial site just two and a half miles outside the city limits. The name of the cemetery was drawn out of a hat by one of the founding fathers. A nurseryman from Scotland was hired to lay out the grounds, and Elmwood was opened to people from all backgrounds to use as their family cemetery. Elmwood has survived wars, military occupation, epidemic disease, and the bankruptcy and near collapse of Memphis, only to emerge as one of the premier outdoor museums in the United States. Its massive collection of Victorian memorial statuary is almost unrivaled, but Elmwood's true allure lies in the stories of those who rest beneath the lush canopy of trees on its 80 acres. The graves at Elmwood belong to soldiers and statesmen, scoundrels and scalawags, writers and musicians, martyrs and madams, the notorious and the anointed, and so many more.

A tour of the Tennessee city filled with famous faces, fascinating trivia, and forgotten lore—plus a former mayor’s previously unpublished private papers. Step inside the fascinating annals of the Bluff City's history and discover the Memphis that only few know. G. Wayne Dowdy, longtime archivist for the Memphis Public Library, examines the history and culture of the Mid-South during its most important decades. Well-known faces like Clarence Saunders, Elvis Presley, and W.C. Handy are joined by some of the more obscure characters from the past, like the Memphis gangster who inspired one of William Faulkner's most famous novels; the local Boy Scout who captured German spies during World War I; the Memphis radio station that pioneered wireless broadcasting; and so many more. Also included are the previously unpublished private papers and correspondence of former mayor E.H. Crump, giving us new insight and a front-row seat to the machine that shaped Tennessee politics in the twentieth century. Includes photos
