Excerpt from The Elements of Metaphysics: Being a Guide for Lectures and Private Use This standpoint OF the reconciliation OF all contradictions has been attained in the main, we believe, 'by mankind in the Idealism founded by Kant and wrought out to perfection by his disciple Schopenhauer. For the truth of this Idealism is the more indubit ably confirmed, the more deeply we penetrate into it, by the threefold harmony which we meet in it, - harmony with itself, harmony with nature, and harmony with the thoughts of the wisest of all times. Moreover it is the Kantian distinction between phenomena and the thing-in-itself, and this distinction alone. Excerpt from Elements of Philosophy: Comprising Logic and Ontology, or General Metaphysics Second: It was judged best, also, for the interests of learn ers in general, to omit the discussion of the modes and figures Of the syllogism; for, in practice they are not attended to, even bv those who actually argue in form, the simple rules of demonstration sufficing for all practical purposes, and being all that IS even really useful in the strictest argumentation. On the other hand, it was deemed expedient to introduce some matters that pertain to branches of Philosophy, whose full treatment is appropriate to another volume; e. G., certain sub jects which strictly belong to Psychology, Cosmology and Natural Theology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elements of Metaphysics In acknowledging my indebtedness to recent writers for many of the ideas contained in the following pages, I have in the first place to express my deep and constant obligations to the various works of Mr. F. H. Bradley. My chief debt to other recent English-speaking philosophers is to Professor Royce and Professor Ward, and I am perhaps scarcely less indebted to Professor Stout. My chief obligations to Continental writers are to Avenarius and to Professor Münsterberg. I trust, however, that there is not one of the authors with whose views I have dealt in the course of my work from whom I have not learned something. At the same time, I ought perhaps to say here once for all that I make no claim to represent the views of any one author or school, and I shall not be surprised if the thinkers to whom I owe most find themselves unable to endorse all that I have written. With respect to the references given at the end of the several chapters, I may note that their aim is simply to afford the reader some preliminary guidance in the further prosecution of his studies. They make no pretence to completeness, and are by no means exclusively drawn from writers who support my own conclusions. One or two important works of which I should have otherwise been glad to make extended use have appeared too recently for me to avail myself of them. Excerpt from A First Book in Metaphysics Lastly, I wished to adapt the book especially to the Oxford or preceptorial method of instruction. Accord ing to this method, the text-book and the lectures in class should serve to give a general View of the subject but should play a far less important part than the stu dent's independent reading and study. The results of this reading and study should be expressed in a weekly, or better fortnightly, essay submitted to the preceptor and afterward discussed with him in an informal con ference held preferably in his private study and attended by not more than three or four students. This enables the teacher to deal with his students as individuals and to vary greatly the amount and kind of reading he as signs to each. Some will do not only more difficult reading than others but three or four times the amount of reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download The Fundamental Problems of Metaphysics (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Fundamental Problems of Metaphysics Though I have often had occasion to touch upon the subjects treated in this book, it is yet doubtful if I should have written this work without important request behind. In the his torical references, I have had to excise portions - particularly in the Mediaeval period - of what I had written, with a view to making the work more suitable for readers in a generation that does not reckon patience among its greatest virtues. Primarily prepared for philosophical readers, those parts of the book which relate to subjects like the First Cause and the World Ground will not fail to interest theological readers also. An extended study of the litera ture of the subjects dealt with convinced me that there was ample need and room for such.
