Excerpt from Elements Differential and Integral Calculus With Applications Tms work is an introduction to the study of the Differential and Integral Calculus, and is intended for colleges and technical schools. The object has been to present the Calculus and some of its important applications simply and concisely, and yet to give as much as it is necessary to know in order to enter upon the study of those subjects which presume a knowledge of the Calculus. The book will be found to be adapted to the needs of the mathematical student, and also will enable the engineer to get that knowledge of the Calculus which is required by him in order to make practical applications of the subject. Excerpt from Elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus: With Examples and Practical Applications IN many respects this work is quite different from any other on the same subject, though in preparing it there has been no attempt at originality beyond presenting the principles in a more tangible form than usual, and thus securing a better text-book for the ordinary student of mathematics. The aim has been to prepare a work for beginners, and at the same time to make it sufficiently comprehensive for the requirements of the usual undergraduate course. The chief distinction of the treatise is that it is based on the conception of Proportional Variations. This method has been employed as the most elementary and practical, and none the less rigorous or general, form of presenting the first principles of the subject (see the following Note). Excerpt from Differential and Integral Calculus: With Applications I have endeavoured to make this book suitable not only for the mathematical student, but also for men like engineers and electricians who require the subject for practical applications, to whom even a slight knowledge of the notation and methods of the Calculus is becoming more and more indispensable. Hitherto in this country the in uence of Newton, although the inventor of Fluxions, has been employed to delay the study of this subject, and make a know ledge of it the privilege of a select few; my object in writing this treatise has been mainly to present the subject in as simple a manner as possible, in order to encourage a larger number of students to cultivate it. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised: Edition) The author has tried to write a textbook that is thoroughly modern and teachable and the capacity and needs Of the student pursuing a first course in 'the Calculus have been kept constantly in mind. The book contains more material than is necessary for the usual course of one hundred lessons given in our colleges and engineering schools; but this gives teachers an Opportunity to choose such subjects as best suit the needs of their classes. It is believed that the volume con tains all topics from which a selection naturally would be made in preparing students either for elementary work in applied science or for more advanced work in pure mathematics.
