Excerpt from Elementary Latin Grammar The Syntax has been less abridged than the other portions of the work, because the natural connection of its several parts rendered curtailment more difficult and because it is right that all students, whatever their ultimate Object may be, should have a systematic view of the principles which regulate the construction of Latin sentences, and of the peculiar idioms of the language. Excerpt from Elementary Latin: An Introductory Course In the preparation of these lessons, the author has kept in view the necessity for simplicity of statement and for the avoidance of unnecessary details. The purpose has been to furnish drill on the forms and constructions of most frequent occurrence, leaving the more difficult syntactical relations and the forms less frequently employed for a later point in the course. A few topics included in the lessons near the end of the book have been given place in order to meet the needs of teachers who prefer a more complete presentation of Latin grammar in the first year. These topics may, however, be omitted and the work of the lessons made to consist of the translation exercises and drill on the essential constructions and forms previously given. Instead of the usual arrangement of lessons which must be divided into two or three assignments, the plan has been adopted of providing short lessons which can usually be covered in single recitations. Naturally, no such plan can be, made to correspond absolutely to the needs of every class, and occasionally a teacher may find it necessary to omit or to leave for later review, part of the exercises of a lesson. But the presentation of forms and syntax in small units will, it is hoped, tend to prevent confusion in the mind of the pupil and to aid the teacher in planning the work of the class. Excerpt from The Eton Latin Grammar, Vol. 1: Elementary, for the Use in the Lower Forms AN Elementary Latin Grammar is naturally divided into two parts, - that which should be learnt by heart, and that with which familiarity is to be gained by constant reference. In the first of these parts - the Accidence and the Syntax Rules - our aim has been, on the one hand, conciseness, gained not by the use of abbreviations or technical terms, but by the omission of matter not essential to beginners; and, on the other hand, clearness, not only of statement, but also of type and arrange ment. In the second part, we have endeavoured to facilitate the use of the book as a book of reference by adopting an alphabetical order, wherever it was possible. Excerpt from Manual Latin Grammar Many of the best friends of classical education have long desired a manual of elementary instruction in Latin grammar, - which lies at the foundation of a classical course, - full and accurate enough to be a practical guide to the learner, but avoiding the prodigious multiplication of details, which have so overgrown that study in our ordinary school text books. In attempting to meet this want, we have been guided by the following principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
