Excerpt from The American Reader, or Elegant Selections in Prose and Poetry: Designed for the Improvement of Youth in the Art of Reading and Speaking With Propriety and Beauty, and for the Cultivation of a Correct Moral Taste The Compiler has been careful to avc every expression and sentiment, that mig gratify a corrupt mind, or, in the least degrc ofiend the eye or car of innocence. This conceives to be peculiarly incumbent on eve person who writes for the benefit of youth. Would, indeed, be a great and happy improw ment in education, if no writings were allow to come under their notice, but such as a perfectly innocent; and if, on all proper occ sions, they were encouraged to peruse the which tend to inspire a due reverence for virtu and an abhorrence of vice, as well as to ar mate them with sentiments of piety and goo ness. Such impressions deeply engraven 1 their minds, and connected with all their attai ments, could scarcely fail of attending the through life; and of producing a solidity principle and character, that would be able resist the danger arising from future intercour with the world. Considering it a commendable and usel practice to exercise pupils mac/1 in the art spelling, and viewing it desirable that thc should spell words not only from their spellin books, but from the lessons which they rea the Compiler has selected words from each se tion for this purpose, and arranged them I themselves, for the accommodation of the i structor and the pupil.
