The problem of conventional, low-temperature superconductivity has been regarded as solved since the seminal work of Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) more than 50 years ago. However, the theory does not allow accurate predictions of some of the most fundamental properties of a superconductor, including the superconducting energy gap on the Fermi surface. This thesis describes the development and scientific implementation of a new experimental method that puts this old problem into an entirely new light. The nominee has made major contributions to the development and implementation of a new experimental method that enhances the resolution of spectroscopic experiments on dispersive lattice-vibrational excitations (the "glue" responsible for Cooper pairing of electrons in conventional superconductors) by more than two orders of magnitude. Using this method,he has discovered an unexpected relationship between the superconducting energy gap and the geometry of the Fermi surface in the normal state, both of which leave subtle imprints in the lattice vibrations that could not be resolved by conventional spectroscopic methods. He has confirmed this relationship on two elemental superconductors and on a series of metallic alloys. This indicates that a mechanism qualitatively beyond the standard BCS theory determines the magnitude and anisotropy of the superconducting gap.

In the past two years conferences on superconductivity have been characterized by the attendance of hundreds of scientists. Consequently, the organizers were forced to schedule numerous parallel sessions and poster presentations with an almost unsurveyable amount of information. It was, therefore, felt that a more informal get-together, providing ample time for a thourough discussion of some topics of current interest in high-temperature superconductivity, was timely and benefitial for leading scientists as well as for newcomers in the field. The present volume contains the majority of papers presented at the International Discussion Meeting on High-Tc Superconductors held at the Mauterndorf Castle in the Austrian Alps from February 7 to 11, 1988. Each subject was introduced in review form by a few invited speakers and then discussed together with the contributed poster presentations. These discussion sessions chaired by selected scientists turned out to be the highlights of the meeting, not only because all the participants truly appreciated the possibility of an information exchange, but mainly because of the magnificent job done by the discussion chairmen, John A. Mydosh (Leiden), Martin Peter (Geneva) and Ken E. Gray (Argonne). First results on the just discovered Bi-superconductors and the clarification of electron resonance experiments on (123)-compounds should be mentioned in particular. The relaxed atomosphere favoring free discussions was certainly promoted by the surroundings offered in the Mauterndorf Castle, which dates back to 1253. Poster presentations and a conference banquet in historic knight's halls are certainly not found everyday in conference routines.

In this thesis the ground state electronic properties, lattice dynamics, electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity of a variety materials are investigated from first principles. The first chapter provides an introduction to the material and concepts of this thesis as well as motivation for the work done herein. Additionally, an overview is given on the theoretical background governing the calculations of this work. This includes overviews of the topics of density functional theory, the pseudopotential approximation, density functional perturbation theory, and applications of these approaches to the calculations of superconductivity. In the second chapter the mechanics of actually performing calculations within the methodology of chapter one are explained. This is accomplished through a detailed description of the computer software EPW. This software has been developed to allow computationally efficient approaches for calculating the electron-phonon interaction. A description of the software package, the particular quantities which it calculates and example calculations are given. The following two chapters present the results of calculations regarding electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in bulk carbon compounds. The occurrence or absence of superconductivity is found to be related in these compounds to Fermi surface nesting and carrier concentrations. In chapter five we investigate the role of the fluorine dopant in the recently discovered (1111) Fe-pnictide superconductors. Contrary to the results of the literature published shortly after the discovery of these compounds, the presence of the dopant is found to actually result in a net decrease in the electron concentration on the Fe-plane within the local density approximation to density functional theory. In the two chapters which follow, we investigate the limits of two dimensional superconductivity in the recent experiments on ultra-thin Pb samples. Chapter six details calculations on freestanding Pb slabs constructed as thin as two monolayers. A useful formula predicting the electron-coupling strength and therefore estimating the superconducting transition temperature is developed. While in the next section a superconducting system is investigated wherein the important Pb-Si(111) interaction in ultra-thin Pb layers is taken into account. The observed superconductivity is explained by electron-phonon coupling and isotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory. The observance of superconductivity in the nearly two-dimensional material is shown not to conflict with the predictions of the Mermin-Wagner theorem. In the final chapter, the phonon-assisted absorption of bulk silicon is calculated from first-principles. The calculated results are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment, and lead the way for the possibility of many first-principle studies on phonon-assisted optical processes in important technological devices.

The search for microscopic models to explain the many superconducting substances has introduced seminal concepts and techniques in many-body physics and in statistical mechanics. The complexity of the high-temperature superconductors has required a remarkable refinement of experimental techniques in order to allow a reliable characterization of the samples, and is partly the reason why so many different microscopic models have so far been proposed. This Enrico Fermi Course on Superconductivity was provided an up-to date presentation of selected experimental and theoretical theories on the (so called) conventional superconductivity and on the high temperature superconductivity. The attention was focused on those reliable measurements which are expected to provide the theory with key constraints, viz: Raman and Infrared Spectroscopy, Nuclear Spin Resonance, Angular Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy, transport measurements, Josephson effect. The lectures devoted to the overview of the BCS theory and to the discussion of minimal models and of the crossover from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation may be particularly useful. The remaining part of the program was shared between phonon and non-phonon based mechanisms. On the one hand, special emphasis has been devoted to the breakdown of the Migdal theorem and to polaronic theories. On the other, the book contains an overview of strongly correlated electron theories, including magnetic interactions. A survey of the physics of vortices completes the theoretical part of the lectures.

The origin of the very high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) in ceramic copper oxide superconductors is one of the greatest mysteries in modern physics. In the superconducting state, electrons form pairs (known as Cooper pairs) and condense into the superfluid state to conduct electric current with zero resistance. For conventional superconductors, it is well established that the 2 electrons in a Cooper pair are 'bonded' by lattice vibrations (phonons), whereas in high-Tc superconductors, the 'glue' for the Cooper pairs is still under intense discussion. Although the high transition temperature and the unconventional pairing symmetry (d-wave symmetry) have led many researchers to believe that the pairing mechanism results from electron-electron interaction, increasing evidence shows that electron-phonon coupling also significantly influences the low-energy electronic structures and hence may also play an important role in high-Tc superconductivity. In a recent issue of PNAS, Carbone et al. use ultrafast electron diffraction, a recently developed experimental technique, to attack this problem from a new angle, the dynamics of the electronic relaxation process involving phonons. Their results provide fresh evidence for the strong interplay between electronic and atomic degrees of freedom in high-Tc superconductivity. In general, ultrafast spectroscopy makes use of the pump-probe method to study the dynamic process in material. In such experiments, one first shoots an ultrafast (typically 10-100 fs) 'pumping' pulse at the sample to drive its electronic system out of the equilibrium state. Then after a brief time delay ([Delta]t) of typically tens of femtoseconds to tens of picoseconds, a 'probing' pulse of either photons or electrons is sent in to probe the sample's transient state. By varying [Delta]t, one can study the process by which the system relaxes back to the equilibrium state, thus acquiring the related dynamic information. This pump-probe experiment is reminiscent of the standard method used by bell makers for hundreds of years to judge the quality of their products (hitting a bell then listening to how the sound would fade away), albeit the relevant time scale here is way beyond tens of femtoseconds. Traditionally, ultrafast spectroscopy was carried out to study gas-phase reactions, but it has also been applied to study condensed phase systems since the development of reliable solid-state ultrafast lasers approximately a decade ago. In addition, the ability to control pulse width, wavelength, and amplification of the output of Ti:Sapphire lasers has further increased the capability of this experimental method. During the past decade, many ultrafast pump-probe experiments have been carried out in various fields by using different probing methods, such as photo-resistivity, fluorescence yield, and photoemission, and they have revealed much new information complementary to the equilibrium spectroscopy methods used before. Carbone et al. used the photon-pump, electron (diffraction)-probe method. The pumping photon pulse first drives the electrons in the sample into an oscillating mode along its polarization direction. Then during the delay time, these excited electrons can transfer excess energy to the adjacent nuclei and cause crystal lattice vibration on their way back to the equilibrium state. An ultrashort electron pulse is shot at the sample at various time delays [Delta]t and the diffraction pattern is collected. Because the electron diffraction pattern is directly related to the crystal lattice structure and its motion, this technique provides a natural way to study the electron-phonon coupling problem. Furthermore, by adjusting the pump pulse's relative polarization with respect to the Cu-O bond direction, Carbone et al. were able to acquire the electron-phonon coupling strength along different directions. Focusing on the lattice dynamic along the c axis, Carbone et al. found that the c-axis phonons in the optimally-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O (Bi2212) are coupled to the electrons with different strength along different directions within the CuO2 plane. The coupling strength reaches its largest value along the 2 Cu-O bond directions and becomes the weakest along the bisector of the angle formed by the 2 Cu-O bonds. As pointed out by Carbone et al., these observations agree well with the calculated coupling strength between electrons and the buckling phonons. Furthermore, their observation of this anisotropic electron-phonon coupling also agrees with results from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), which measures the equilibrium-state properties of materials. In ARPES measurements, electron-phonon coupling manifests itself as a kink anomaly in the band dispersion and a corresponding sudden broadening in the spectral width.
