Excerpt from Electromagnetic Theory, Vol. 2 In Chapter VIII. I have given a condensed account of my researches on generalised differentiation and series, a subject that grows naturally out of the operational way of working. Although I think this subject has a large future, yet I must warn the reader that there is no pretence of logical rigour, and that much of the matter was rejected some years ago by persons who ought to be good judges. The several appendices relate to electromagnetic waves in general, save the one on rational units. There is some pro gress to report. Of the three stages to Salvation, two have been safely passed through, namely the Awakening and the Repentance. I am not alone in thinking that the third stage, the Reformation, is bound to come. Excerpt from Electromagnetic Theory, Vol. 3 Long ago I had the intention, if circumstances were favour able, of finishing the third volume of this work about 1904, and the fourth about 1910. But circumstances have not been favourable. That is all that need be said about it here, save to add that I have excluded parts-oi the third volume, and included parts of the fourth. In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual. Galileo Galilei, physicist and astronomer (1564-1642) This book is a second edition of “Classical Electromagnetic Theory” which derived from a set of lecture notes compiled over a number of years of teaching elect- magnetic theory to fourth year physics and electrical engineering students. These students had a previous exposure to electricity and magnetism, and the material from the ?rst four and a half chapters was presented as a review. I believe that the book makes a reasonable transition between the many excellent elementary books such as Gri?th’s Introduction to Electrodynamics and the obviously graduate level books such as Jackson’s Classical Electrodynamics or Landau and Lifshitz’ Elect- dynamics of Continuous Media. If the students have had a previous exposure to Electromagnetictheory, allthematerialcanbereasonablycoveredintwosemesters. Neophytes should probable spend a semester on the ?rst four or ?ve chapters as well as, depending on their mathematical background, the Appendices B to F. For a shorter or more elementary course, the material on spherical waves, waveguides, and waves in anisotropic media may be omitted without loss of continuity.

Excerpt from Elements of Electromagnetic Theory I am of course indebted to many books and memoirs. My obligations are especially great, as the most cursory examination of the book will Show, to the works of Maxwell, Heaviside, and Poynting. I am also much indebted to Professor A. G. Webster for the use of a number of excellent diagrams from his treatise on electrical theory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book is an electromagnetics classic. Originally published in 1941, it has been used by many generations of students, teachers, and researchers ever since. Since it is classic electromagnetics, every chapter continues to be referenced to this day. This classic reissue contains the entire, original edition first published in 1941. Additionally, two new forewords by Dr. Paul E. Gray (former MIT President and colleague of Dr. Stratton) and another by Dr. Donald G. Dudley, Editor of the IEEE Press Series on E/M Waves on the significance of the book's contribution to the field of Electromagnetics.
