While electromagnetic interactions were first used to probe the structure of elementary particles more than 20 years ago, their importance has only become fully evident in the last 10 years. In the resonance region, photo production experiments have provided clear evidence for simple quark model ideas, and confirmed the Melosh-transformed SU(6)w as a relevant symmetry classification. At higher energies, their most striking feature is their similarity to hadron-induced reactions, and they have provided fresh insight into the ideas developed to explain strong-interaction physics. New dimensions are added by taking the photon off mass shell, both in the spacelike region, where the development of high-energy electron and muon beams has led to the discovery and study of scaling and the intro duction of "partons," and even more dramatically in the timelike region, where the development of high-energy electron-positron storage rings has led to the exciting discoveries of the last four years. In view of the immense interest stimulated by these developments, an extensive review of our present state of knowledge is both timely and useful. Because of the very wide range of the subject, a cooperative venture presents itself as the most suitable format and is the one we have adopted here. The emphasis throughout is primarily, but not entirely, on phenomenology, concentrating on describing the main features of the experimental data and on the theoretical ideas used directly in their inter pretation.

The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement is not yet understood, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. As a consequence of these difficulties, the frontier between effective and fundamental theories has been intensively investigated in the last few years, and progress has been achieved in several directions. The 'Hadron Physics' workshop gathered together experts who have been taking the lead in these developments in recent years. Four sets of lectures were presented, providing a pedagogical and updated basis that gives support to research work in frontier problems. This book puts together the main current methods in the study of the properties of hadrons. The perspective of future developments based on different approaches can then be more clearly perceived.

One of the activities of the Ettore Majorana Centre for ,Scientific Culture is the international advanced study courses on scientific topics which are of particular relevance today. The Centre is located in Erice, a mountain town in the province of Trapani in Sicily. At present over seventy Schools of the Centre are active, holding annual or biennial courses, so that about forty courses are organized each year. To date some twenty thou sand participants have attended the courses of the various Schools of the Centre. The International Physics Workshop Series has been established to make the contents of the Workshops o'f great topical interest available to those who were unable to attend them. The courses are conducted on an advanced, post-doctoral level. This volume - the proceedings of the session on "Quarks and Hadronic Structure" - is the first of the Series. In September 1975, thirty-three physicists from twenty-one laboratories in nine countries met in Erice to attend the Workshop. The countries represented were: Austria, France, Germany, India, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The purpose of this Workshop was to bring to gether a group of theorists working on various aspects of the quark structure of hadrons to discuss and critically evaluate the present situation. Professor Morpurgo was given the direction of the Workshop. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him most warmly for having accepted this responsibility and for the success of the Work shop.

The book provides theoretical and phenomenological insights on the structure of matter, presenting concepts and features of elementary particle physics and fundamental aspects of nuclear physics. Starting with the basics (nomenclature, classification, acceleration techniques, detection of elementary particles), the properties of fundamental interactions (electromagnetic, weak and strong) are introduced with a mathematical formalism suited to undergraduate students. Some experimental results (the discovery of neutral currents and of the W± and Z0 bosons; the quark structure observed using deep inelastic scattering experiments) show the necessity of an evolution of the formalism. This motivates a more detailed description of the weak and strong interactions, of the Standard Model of the microcosm with its experimental tests, and of the Higgs mechanism. The open problems in the Standard Model of the microcosm and macrocosm are presented at the end of the book.
