A warm El Nino event developed in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean during May-Aug. 1997. Predictions called for a fall, winter, and early spring in the Midwest that would have above normal temp. and below normal precipitation. This report presents information about The Midwest Climate Center's activities related to El Nino in 1997-1998: the predictive outlooks issued, a climatic assessment of the monthly and seasonal weather conditions during the event, and a description of the societal and economic impacts caused in the Midwest.
