"A deluxe book produced at the point that Harroun and Bierstadt dissolved their business ... The Artotypes in this book are some of the finest produced by Bierstadt. The pictorial record of this engineering feat is remarkable in itself; casing and tilting the obelisk, loading it into the side of the ship by removing part of the hull, pulling it out on a special dock in the Hudson and then moving it by custom made rail from the river to the site next to the Metropolitan Museum. The illustrations show the hieroglyphics, now mostly lost due to New York's polluted air, bright and clear."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 82

Excerpt from The Archaeology of Rome, Vol. 4: The Egyptian Obelisks Tms concise account of the Egyptian Obelisks in Rome is drawn up entirely from the inscriptions on them. Those of the Popes, record when each was placed in its present situation. Those of the Emperors, state on what occasion each was brought to Rome. The hieroglyphics give the original history of each in Egypt. Two of them only were made for the Romans, or are of their time; the others are much older, and belong to the history of Egypt, as will be seen in reading the account of them. These were brought to Rome as trophies of conquest only, and were erected in the most public places to commemorate the triumph of the Roman arms. Excerpt from The Egyptian Obelisks, Vol. 4: To Which Is Added a Supplement to the First Three Parts, Which Form the First Volume IV. The obelisk at the Porta del Popolo, and that at the Trinita de' Monti, that before the Pantheon, and that in the Villa Mattei on the Coelian, all four bear the names of Rameses II., the king who was the greatest of all Egyptian conquerors and builders, who has left the most numerous monuments, and whose historical reign is the principal of those which are blended and confused together in the fabulous accounts of Sesostris. But the obelisk at the Porta del Popolo bears also the name of Seti, the father of Rameses II., who seems to have made at the opening of his reign two campaigns in Mesopotamia with such brilliant success as to have gained a re nown equal to that of any other Egyptian conqueror, though he was wounded in his second year, and lost his sight, so that his reign is marked as having lasted less than two years, while his son Rameses II. Reigned sixty-six years and some months. But the magnificent tomb of Seti, discovered by Belzoni, proves that though he may have been incapacitated from reigning, he really lived on after the apparent accession of his son, who seems to have put his father's name on no fresh monuments, but only on those which were already commenced when he lost his sight, and to have been too selfish to allow any other compensation for the loss of actual power, than that of continuing to increase the magnificence of his tomb, a monument hidden from the eyes of all contemporaries in the bowels of the rock. The inscription of the name of Seti on the obelisk at the Porta del Popolo must have been cut in b.c. 1487. V., VI., VII. The other three obelisks mentioned above as belong ing to the reign of Rameses II. After the blindness of his father, must have been erected at dates lying between the years 1486 and 1420 b.c. During this period it was that Ehud and Shamgar judged Israel; and during the same period, near its beginning, after Rameses II. Had in nine years overrun Western and Central Asia, certain colonists from Egypt, especially Danaus, the father of a line of Argive kings, settled in Greece. Excerpt from The New York Obelisk, "Cleopatra's Needle," From Egypt to Central Park There are also about a dozen more in Egypt that we know of, but these are prostrate, including the one still in the quarry at Assuan. We are not sure if Obelisks were inscribed before or after erection, altho' due to the fact that some now standing are uninscribed, it would appear that they were erected before they were inscribed. The height of the New York obelisk is 69 feet 6 inches, and the weight pounds. The highest one in Rome is 105 feet 6 inches, and weighs pounds, and from this they run down to only a few feet not much more than headstones. Egyptians must have been possessed of a very high degree of engineering skill to quarry them out of the mountain side and place them many hundreds of miles away, exactly where they were wanted. We have no knowledge of how this was done, but there in Assuan prostrate in its quarry, -25 feet longer than ours in New York, lies an unfinished obelisk which may one day reveal the mystery. Excerpt from The Problem of the Obelisks, From a Study of the Unfinished, Obelisk at Aswan Although more than a year has elapsed since sending the manuscript of The Aswan Obelisk to press, I have not had to modify my views on the ancient methods in any point of importance further study of the quarry has, however, induced me to omit the alternative suggestion on the manner in which the obelisk was rolled clear of the quarry (page 53) and to assert, with some confidence, that sleds were an essential in the transport of all large obelisks. To the reader who may charge me with expending so much space on such a restricted subject as that of the making of obelisks, I would recall the deathbed answer of the old professor to his friends, who had asked him if he did not think he had wasted his life by devot ing it exclusively to the study of Greek preposi tions. He replied: It is true; I should have confined myself to those governing the Dative! Like him, I feel that I have unduly digressed in Chapter VIII, when so much remains to be discussed on the mechanical side.
