Excerpt from Effect on Streamflow of Four Forest Practices in the Mountains of West Virginia The Fernow Experimental Forest is located in northern West Virginia (fig. 1) in mountainous country west of the main ridge of the Alleghenies. Drainage is via the Monon gahela River to the Ohio at Pittsburgh. The five study water sheds, which range from 38 to 96 acres in area, are contiguous or nearly so. The topography, geology, soils and forest cover (fig. 2) are generally representative of this part of the Appalachians. This book explains forest and woody biomass harvest, harvesting machines, systems, logistics, supply chain management, best management practices, harvest scheduling and carbon sequestration. It also covers applications of harvesting principles in forest and biomass management practices. The book provides an in-depth understanding of functions and applications of current and future harvesting technologies, the unique characteristics of harvesting machine with respect to cost, productivity, and environmental impacts. Special features include harvest machine illustrations and images of field operations, tabular presentations of filed studies of forest operations and detailed modelling processes for forest and biomass harvest logistics and supply chain management. Specifically, the book is designed for students, researchers, educators, and practitioners in the field of forest and biomass harvest and logistics. The book’s contents have been tested in teaching as the Harvesting Forest Product class for undergraduates and graduates in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources at West Virginia University since 2000. The information contained in this book is a robust reference resource for students who would be future forest and biomass managers, timber contractors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and educators in the fields of forest and biomass operations, engineering, and resource management.

Because of the growing need for wood fiber in the pulp and paper industry there is an opportunity for sawmill operators to increase their income by converting hardwwood sawmill residues (slabs, edgings, and trim) to pulp chips. By selling wood chips and reducing residue-disposal costs, sawmills could improve their utilization of sawlogs. But to justify the installation of debarking and chipping machines, and to know what such machines could contribute to his business, the sawmill owner must have a thorough understanding of the costs involved in chip production. To help him in this we have made case studies of seven sawmills in southeastern Ohio, eastern Kentucky, and Tennessee, and have analyzed all the factos of cost involved in chip production.

The purpose of this research paper is to present some of the methods by which water yields can be increased from forested watersheds and to discuss the effectiveness of these methods under different conditions. Methods discussed include clearcutting, partial cutting, and use of herbicides. Effectiveness during drought is considered. Effects on water yield of reforestation, forest protection, and forest fire and other destructive agencies are discussed. And finally, safeguards for water quality are considered.
