Mulberry (Morus sp.) leaf is the sole natural food source of silkworms (Bombyx mori L.). The mulberry leaf quality has predominating influence on the development of the silkworm and the quality of the silk cocoons. Different mulberry genotypes under cultivation are not equally important from nutritional point of view. No single genotype contains all the nutrients at the highest level. Genotypic differences in nutritional quality can be examined through various methods. This book gives insights into estimating mulberry leaf yield, examining leaf biochemistry, appraising critical feeding hours of silkworm on a particular mulberry genotype, evaluating silkworm moulting ratio and characterizing consumption-conversion indices of native and exotic mulberry genotypes. Hence, the book provides experimental information in evaluating elite mulberry genotypes from biochemical as well as bioassay perspectives. The information generated is useful for sericulturists, professionals working in the field of Entomology and students studying Entomology, specifically the sericulture.

In complex systems, such as our body or a plant, the host is living together with thousands of microbes, which support the entire system in function and health. The stability of a microbiome is influenced by environmental changes, introduction of microbes and microbial communities, or other factors. As learned in the past, microbial diversity is the key and low-diverse microbiomes often mirror out-of-control situations or disease. It is now our task to understand the molecular principles behind the complex interaction of microbes in, on and around us in order to optimize and control the function of the microbial community – by changing the environment or the addition of the right microorganisms. This Research Topic focuses on studies (including e.g. original research, perspectives, mini reviews, and opinion papers) that investigate and discuss: 1) The role of the microbiome for the host/environmental system 2) The exchange and change of microbes and microbial communities (interplay) 3) The influence of external factors toward the stability of a microbiome 4) Methods, possibilities and approaches to change and control a system’s microbiome (e.g. in human or plant disease) 5) Experimental systems and approaches in microbiome research. The articles span the areas: human health and disease, animal and plant microbiomes, microbial interplay and control, methodology and the built environment microbiome.

Mulberry (Morus sp.) based bivoltine silkworms (Bombyx mori L.) are known to produce quality silk cocoons. Superior silkworm strains feeding on high performing mulberry variety raise economic parameters leading to high return. Silkworms utilize leaf matters and convert the leaf protein into silk protein including their growth and development. This book gives insights into nutritional probe of mulberry varieties through early fasting, leaf quality improvement through fortification, heat tolerance of silkworm strains through heat exposure, effectiveness of feeding period through larval starvation and cocoon quality through mounting density tests for enhancing better performance. Complete rearing of common silkworm strain on selected mulberry varieties and promising silkworm strains on common mulberry variety demonstrate strength of economic parameters. The book therefore, provides pragmatic information in designing a successful silkworm rearing model. The information generated and build up is useful for sericulturists, professionals working in the field of Entomology and students studying Entomology, specifically the sericulture.
