The British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) designed 140 cemeteries in the countryside of Flanders and Northern France for soldiers killed in the First World War. Edwin Lutyens was born in 1869, one of a talented family of fourteen. Ill health forced him to be educated privately. He spent only six months studying architecture at the Royal College of Art before joining the practice of George and Peto. At the age of twenty he started his own practice.
