Jeff Lee Byrem is a writer who has been floundering in the Sea of Education for over four decades. Education Follies is a memoir of sorts that has two purposes. First, the author has identified the windmills at which he has been tilting and believes that educators, policy makers, parents and others may find his observations of some value. Second, the memoir is a symbolic end to the author's career as an educator. Compiling and publishing Education Follies provides catharsis from the frustration and regret the author feels because of the failure of American Education (in which he was an active and willing player) to provide high quality education for those children who need it most. From the Foreword: If we are a truly compassionate people who cared about others regardless of their race, ethnic background, or class; if all teachers practiced what is known about motivation and instruction; if educational leaders cared more about making a difference than they do about making a career, then all children would be receiving the education that American Mother Culture professes is the promise of equality of opportunity.
