Download The Story of the Royal Scots Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Story of the Royal Scots: The Lothian Regiment; Formerly the First or the Royal Regiment of Foot But in a closer fashion we are concerned with our neighbours who have left their homes in our province of Lothian, be they mansions or cottages, to fight for us. For them even more than for ourselves this Story is written. We wish them to know the full splendour of the tradition which they carry like their colours. Nothing surely to them or to us can be more inspiriting than the record of the centuries of valour which they represent. They have in this war proved already that they yield nothing to their forbears in achievement, yet they may well wish to know the details of the traditions that they inherit and emulate. We at any rate, men, women and children of the Lothians, Edinburgh and Peebles, the romantic county with the unromantic name, desire to know all about our famous regiment, and so we welcome this book. There will need to be another volume added to it when this war is over. Honour, then, to The Royal Scots, bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, among the choicest of our fighting men, whose record is in this book, as on the field of battle. We who cannot stand with them must at least try all we can to sustain them and fill their ranks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download The Berwick and Lothian Coasts (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Berwick and Lothian Coasts I have spent many hours in the Advocates Library at Edinburgh, in Cambridge University Library and in the London Library, and it would be very difficult to give a complete list of all the books to which I have referred; obligations sufii ciently definite are acknowledged in the text, but to the following works I wish in addition to ex press a general indebtedness Scottish Histories of different scope by William Robertson, Cosmo Innes, J. Hill Burton, P. F. Tytler, William F. Skene, Andrew Lang, and particularly Professor Hume Brown; Castellated and Domestic, also Ecclesiastical, Architecture of Scotland, by David Macgibbon and Thomas Ross; Scenery of Scotland, by Archibald Geikie the Dictionary of National Biography, and above all the Statistical Accounts of Scotland pub lished in 1791 - 9 (sir John Sinclair) and in 1845. The latter is by far the most satisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download The Gateway of Scotland Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Gateway of Scotland: Or East Lothian, Lammermoor and the Merse That the south-eastern corner of Scotland, or, in broad terms, the country between Berwick and Edinburgh, is as a whole the most historically interesting region in the northern kingdom, no one, I presume, will deny. Its geographical situation has virtually entailed upon it this distinction since recorded history began. Nor, having regard to the past as well as to the present, can any objection be urged against the title of this book. But it is not mainly for this reason that after some summers of rambling on the English Marches to the south of it, I have ventured to cross the Tweed, a liberty which I trust will be forgiven an Englishman by my readers in the north. For this little enterprise might with truth be designated a revisitation rather than a fresh departure. Indeed the reminiscent note so frequently sounded in these pages might almost call for some apology if it were not for the hope that occasional glimpses into another and widely different day might peradventure prove of some interest to a younger generation, even of Scotsmen. Moreover, it is at least noteworthy that so far as I know no appreciation by pen or pencil in book form of this distinguished and inspiring region - certainly no recent or accessible one - exists from which those who care to may gather something of it. Download The Heart of Mid Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The title of the book refers to the Old Tolbooth prison in Edinburgh, Scotland, at the time in the heart of the Scottish county of Midlothian. The historical backdrop was the event known as the Porteous riots. In 1736, a riot broke out in Edinburgh over the execution of two smugglers. The Captain of the City Guards, Captain John Porteous, ordered the soldiers to fire into the crowd, killing several people. Porteous was later killed by a lynch mob who stormed the Old Tolbooth.
