Data were collected from bedding and potted plant growers serving the wholesale and retail markets to determine business characteristics, average annual gross sales, average fixed and variable costs, costs per square foot per week ($/ft2/wk) or costs per square foot per year ($/ft2/yr) and utilization of space. Business size, including greenhouse area, outdoor pads, fields and supplemental buildings, ranged from 85,337 ft2 to 222,336 ft2. Greenhouses were the primary production area for bedding and potted plant growers, while cut flower growers primarily used field production. Bedding and potted plant growers averaged sales of $896,519 compared to sales of $45,423 for cut flower growers. Wholesale markets had higher sales than retail markets for bedding and potted plant businesses and cut flower businesses. Labor was the greatest expense for all market segments. Correlation analysis indicated a positive association between advertising costs and sales in the wholesale markets. Positive associations in the retail markets were found between employee compensation and sales and conference/travel expense and sales. Financial data collected from bedding and potted plant growers serving the wholesale and retail markets was used to determine space utilization and fixed costs per square foot per week ($/ft2/wk). Calculation of this cost included adjustments for space and time utilization. Wholesale bedding and potted plant growers were determined to have fixed costs of $0.236/ft2/wk and retail bedding and potted plant growers had a cost of $0.334/ft2/wk for greenhouse production area. Financial data collected from wholesale and retail cut flower growers were used to determine space utilization and costs per square foot per year ($/ft2/yr). The wholesale cut flower businesses were determined to have a fixed cost of $1.220/ft2/yr, while the retail cut flower businesses yielded a cost of $0.787/ft2/yr for field production. Busine.

Floriculture is emerging as an important commercial crop sector in India from the point of view of both domestic and foreign markets. Demand for floricultural products is steadily increasing both in the domestic as well as export markets. The industry is gaining prominence from three broad counts: creating more employment, ensuring higher incomes to rural people and earning more foreign exchange. India is the second largest producer of flowers after China. According to National Horticulture Board (NHB), area under floriculture at all India level had increased from 53,000 hectares in 1993-94 to 2,48,000 hectares in 2015-16. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the area was 7.66 per cent, while the CAGR of production of loose and cut flowers were 9.44 per cent and 23.10 per cent, respectively. The proportion of the area under high-tech floriculture to the total floriculture area is 70 per cent in Netherlands and 90 per cent in Colombia, whereas in India it is hardly 500 hectares accounting for just 0.56 per cent of the total area under floriculture, while the rest is under traditional flowers. In India, nearly 77 per cent of area under floricultural crops is concentrated in eight states viz., Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. India has a scope to bridge the gap between demand and supply, as global demand of floricultural products is growing at a faster rate. India is enriched with diverse agro-climatic conditions such as, fertile land, suitable climate, abundant water supply, low labour cost, availability of skilled manpower etc. which are quite beneficial for growing a variety of flower plants throughout the year. Floricultural crops are highly labour intensive and in a country like India floriculture as an industry has tremendous potential for generation of gainful employment in rural as well as urban areas.

While some may dispute that economics is the driving force behind much of history, nobody can argue that trade is not a significant factor in international relations. In an increasingly globalised world, products are perpetually crossing borders, leading to both political and fiscal conflicts. Businesses have to face diverse markets and regions while worrying about protectionist government initiatives that hamper free trade. Even the ostensible champion of free markets, America, has its own streak of inhibiting the flow of goods; witness the recent steel tariffs which have angered European partners. No society, therefore, is immune to the pressures of world trade and the need to balance the free movement of products with the desire to preserve domestic industries. This book assembles a collection of articles examining some of the most current and divisive issues in the international trade arena. They range from the tensions between the United States and Mexico in NAFTA to the war-fuelled trade in diamonds in Africa. With such a broad range of issues discussed, this book serves as a needed tool for understanding the most important contemporary economic subjects.
