Download The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from Echoes: From a Sunday-School Echoes - Reverberations that have floated on the time of a few years' Christian work, and in their flight were caught and secured with pen and ink for personal reflection, but with no intention whatever of presenting in such a form as this. Without concentration of thought in the preparation of these lines, as is perceivable, they were fashioned from passing thoughts, reflections or incidents in the busy pursuits of life, hence, perhaps, their apparent digression. I therefore ask your fairest consideration of the motive in their presentation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
