As we taste, chew, swallow, digest, and excrete, our foods transform us, while our eating, in its turn, affects the wider earthly environment. In Eating in Theory Annemarie Mol takes inspiration from these transformative entanglements to rethink what it is to be human. Drawing on fieldwork at food conferences, research labs, health care facilities, restaurants, and her own kitchen table, Mol reassesses the work of authors such as Hannah Arendt, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Hans Jonas, and Emmanuel Levinas. They celebrated the allegedly unique capability of humans to rise above their immediate bodily needs. Mol, by contrast, appreciates that as humans we share our fleshy substance with other living beings, whom we cultivate, cut into pieces, transport, prepare, and incorporate—and to whom we leave our excesses. This has far-reaching philosophical consequences. Taking human eating seriously suggests a reappraisal of being as transformative, knowing as entangling, doing as dispersed, and relating as a matter of inescapable dependence.

Low carb is lekker is the brainchild of Inè Reynierse, who embarked on a mission to make the benefits of a low-carb lifestyle an achievable, budget-friendly reality for her friends and family. Her ‘decarbed’ versions of South Africa’s most popular and well-loved recipes soon caught the attention of various social networks and the growing need for a basic Low carb is lekker recipe collection. There are easy low-carb, wheat-free and sugar-free alternatives to some alltime family favourites (think bobotie, mac ’n cheese and curry and ‘rice’), quick comfort foods (gnocchi and chicken pie) as well as decadent treats (malva pudding, chocolate brownies and milk tart spring to mind). Written by a mom for moms who want to feed their loved ones back to health, Low carb is lekker is also a celebration for fellow South Africans who love the tastes of home without compromising health and wellness.

This well-wrought story is drawn from Campbell’s firsthand knowledge of the karretjiemense (donkey cart people) of the Great Karoo, a vast area of parched earth and craggy mountains in South Africa. Through the voices of Kapok and Muis, the parents, and Fansie and Witpop, the two oldest children, we come to know an undocumented karretjiemense family and their bare-bones lifestyle. Kapok, who tries to find work where he can but uses alcohol to escape reality, is not concerned that the children don’t have government-issued IDs. Muis feels differently: “Without government names, who will the police search for if they are lost?” Muis also worries that Kapok’s desire to get his family out of the dry, hot veld and seek stability in the town of Leeu Gamka will get her killed. Miskiet, the man who raped her there 15 years earlier, reveals to readers that he holds a murderous grudge. The characters’ use of Afrikaans-interspersed English and their personal perceptions of circumstances expose the complexities of an often invisible culture. Vivid descriptions and underlying suspense unleash in readers the desire to absorb every detail of this poignant novel.

Billy’s dragon tattoo will attract strange looks in the Karoo town his family now calls home. It’s difficult to blend in when your father’s the new police colonel and your mother’s strung out on pills and wine. Before Billy meets Suzan, who makes him dream in a sideways world, the gangster Ou Joe’s roadside brothel provides strange comfort to truckers and curious youths alike. Ou Joe plans to leave a legacy before staging his final showdown with the cancer growing in his belly. After a brutal night, the colonel sets Ou Joe’s place in his sights and Billy must take a stand when good and evil are yet to pick sides. In the style of a modern western, Johan Vlok Louw’s novel is filled with youth, cars and guns. The book is an uppercut to the chin, its prose as evocative as the Karoo landscape of its setting.
