This is the first comprehensive English-language study of East Asian art history in a transnational context, and challenges the existing geographic, temporal, and generic paradigms that currently frame the art history of East Asia. This pioneering study proposes an important new framework that focuses on the relationship between China, Japan, and Korea. By reconsidering existing concepts of ‘East Asia’, and examining the porousness of boundaries in East Asian art history, the study proposes a new model for understanding trans-local artistic production – in particular the mechanics of interactions – at the turn of the 20th century.

Today, China's classical antiquity is often studied through recovered artifacts, but before this practice became widespread, scholars instead reconstructed the distant past through classical texts and transmitted illustrations. Among the most important illustrated commentaries was the Sanli tu, or Illustrations to the Ritual Classics, whose origins are said to date back to the great commentator Zheng Xuan. Design by the Book, which accompanies an exhibition at Bard Graduate Center Gallery, discusses the history and cultural significance of the Sanli tu in medieval China. The Sanli tu survives in a version produced around 960 by Nie Chongyi, a professor at the court of the Later Zhou (951-960) and Northern Song (960-1127) dynasties. It is now mostly remembered--if at all--for its controversial entries and as a quaint predecessor of the more empirical antiquarian scholarship produced since the mid-eleventh century. But such criticism hides the fact that the book remained a standard resource for more than 150 years, playing a crucial role in the Song dynasty's perception of ancient ritual and construction of a Confucian state cult. Richly illustrated, Design by the Book brings renewed focus to one of China's most fascinating medieval works.

We all know we're not supposed to judge books by their covers, but the truth is that we do just that nearly every time we walk into a bookstore or pull a book off a tightly packed shelf. It's really not something we should be ashamed about, for it reinforces something we sincerely believe: design matters. At its best, book cover design is an art that transcends the publisher's commercial imperativesto reflect both an author's ideas and contemporary cultural values in a vital, intelligent, and beautiful way. In this groundbreaking and lavishly illustrated history, authors Ned Drew and Paul Sternberger establish American book cover design as a tradition of sophisticated, visual excellence that has put shape to our literary landscape. By Its Cover traces the story of the American book cover from its inception as a means of utilitarian protection for the book to its current status as an elaborately produced form of communication art. It is, at once, the intertwined story of American graphic design and American literature, and features the work of such legendary figures as Rockwell Kent, E. McKnight Kauffer, Paul Rand, Alvin Lustig, Rudy deHarak, and Roy Kuhlman along with more recent and contemporary innovators including Push Pin Studios, Chermayeff & Geismar, Karen Goldberg, Chip Kidd, and John Gall.

The Encyclopedia of East Asian Design is the first comprehensive publication to focus on East Asian design and its histories. Although definitions of design in Asia are multiple, fluid and historically contingent, the disparate cultures within this vast landmass have long produced arts and crafts, interior, graphic, and design objects for domestic, regional, and global consumption. The encyclopedia provides in-depth, critically informed coverage of these practices, products, and the interpretive issues pertaining to them. The work is organised by country to reflect specific regional and national histories and geographies. Within these geographies, traditions, histories, theories and practices as well as key issues in modern and contemporary design are considered. The topics covered in these volumes range from ceramics and textiles, interior and architectural design, to environmental and sustainable design.

This book examines four contemporary sites of visual culture in East Asia through the poetic prism of the “ruinous garden.” Framing destroyed, discarded, and displaced material objects within a rhetoric of development and relating this to the experience of ethnic/national culture, the book presents succinct analyses of visual works, as well as cultural criticisms, centered on space in metropolitan Japan and Hong Kong, China. These analyses are placed in dialog with approaches from postcolonial texts, addressing development and fractures in representation. Additionally, the book suggests graphic design as a form of retrospective cultural thinking, encompassing visual and invisible modernity, as well as an attachment to disappearing space. Offering a unique and thorough analysis of Japanese visual culture, combining discussion on photography, installation art, and graphic design, as well as integrating material from Hong Kong visual culture in discussions of identity, this book will appeal to students and scholars of visual culture in East Asia, environmental art, and environmental humanities.

From the fraught world of geopolitics to business and the academy, it’s more vital than ever that Westerners and East Asians understand how each other thinks. As Jin Li shows in this groundbreaking work, the differences run deep. Li explores the philosophical origins of the concept of self in both cultures and synthesizes her findings with cutting-edge psychological research to reveal a fundamental contrast. Westerners tend to think of the self as being, as a stable entity fixed in time and place. East Asians think of the self as relational and embedded in a process of becoming. The differences show in our intellectual traditions, our vocabulary, and our grammar. They are even apparent in our politics: the West is more interested in individual rights and East Asians in collective wellbeing. Deepening global exchanges may lead to some blurring and even integration of these cultural tendencies, but research suggests that the basic self-models, rooted in long-standing philosophies, are likely to endure. The Self in the West and East Asia is an enriching and enlightening account of a crucial subject at a time when relations between East and West have moved center-stage in international affairs.

By the time the Gutenberg Bible appeared in Germany in 1456, printing had already been known in the East for some five hundred years. The Chinese had made movable type from ceramic and from wood in the eleventh century, and the Koreans developed the technique of casting type in bronze, iron, and various alloys. In East Asia, this revolutionary technology was intimately connected with the art of calligraphy, which reached supreme aesthetic heights espeically in China. It is this aspect of East Asian printing that gives it an impressive place in the history of art. [This book] carefully examines the influence of the different styles of calligraphy on the making of books both before and after the advent of printing. First exploring early forms of writing such as inscriptions on bone, bamboo strips, and bronzes, the authors go on to trace the historic stages of bookmaking, from handwritten scrolls on silk and paper to block-printed books and, finally, the products of early modern times, printined with movable metal type. Illustrated with photographs of one hundred and twenty-nine items selected for exhibition at the Art Museum, Princeton University, this book is also a catalogue of treasures from the University's Gest Library, a collection of almost half a million rare and valuable volumes in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other languages.-- Book Jacket.
