This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1872 edition. Excerpt: ...voice is slighted its power becomes less; and if this goes on, it will not speak at all at last. Beware of that. It is no good sign when you can sin, and feel no twinge; when you can laugh at your old fears. What does this show? Not that you are safe, only that you have grown hard. It may seem more pleasant to go on boldly in sin, fearing nothing. But there was more hope of you when you did fear. You have lost something in getting rid of those fears. The worst state for a man is when God says, " Let him alone."1 For then the Holy Spirit, who used to strive with him by conscience, leaves him to himself, to his own evil heart, his own sinful inclinations, his own work, his own wages, --and, "The wages of sin is death."2 Do not quench the Spirit then by turning a deaf ear to conscience. But remember it is God himself speaking by it; and speaking in love, to warn you, stop you, and turn you. 1 Acts xxiv. 16. Be sure you treat conscience well; keep it ever tender and true, by always listening when it speaks. Do not live a day or an hour with an evil conscience. It you have never known the blessing of a good one, go and seek it without delay at the cross of Christ. If you once had this blessing and have lost it, never rest till it be yours again. Remember the words of God, "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely; for mine anger is turned away from him."8 Go to God in prayer, and ask him for Jesus Christ's sake to give you back a good conscience. And, lastly, guard it well when you have it. You cannot do this yourself, for you are sinful and weak. But ask for the Holy Spirit. For each day's temptations seek this help. Traps and pitfalls lie in your way, and a great enemy is always watching to rob you...
