Excerpt from Early History of Blackwood's Magazine To understand what Blackwood's magazine did for the Magazine literature of Scotland, it is necessary to glance at the Magazines of 18th Century Scotland. Scotland had been fairly well supplied with periodicals of every de scription in the leth Century. The Edinburgh Courant, founded in 1705, continued until 1886; The Caledonian Mercury 1720; The Mercury 1674-1757. These magazines were of little importance and the first really noteworthy periodical was the Scots' Magazine established in 1739, and taken over by Constable in 1800. This magazine was a monthly publication and its contents consisted chiefly of book reviews. It continued until Constable's failure in 1826. The weekly Magazine or edinburgh.amusement (1768-1784) had a very wide circulation, due probably to the varied character of its contents. Neither of the last mentioned magazines held a critical attitude toward litera ture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The tales of terror and hysteria published in the heyday (1817-32) of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine became a literary legend in the nineteenth century. Blackwood's was the most important and influential literary-political journal of its time, and a major institution not just in Scottish letters but in the development of British and American Romanticism. Intemperate in political polemic and feared for its literary assassinations, the magazinebecame just as notorious for the shocking power of its fictional offerings. These set a new standard of concentrated dread and precisely calculated alarm, and were to establish themselves as a landmark in the development of the short magazine story. The influence of Blackwood's quickly reached manymajor authors, including Dickens, Emily Bronte, Robert Browning, and Edgar Allan Poe. This edition selects some of the best and most representative tales from the magazine's first fifteen years, including work by Walter Scott, James Hogg, and John Galt, alongside talented but now almost forgotten figures like William Mudford, William Godwin (son of the philosopher), and SamuelWarren.
