Burbank is an innovator, a world travelera city with artistic flair and creativity. From the entertainment industry taking up residence in the early 20th century to the Lockheed Aircraft Company opening shop in 1928, Burbanks masterpieces have transcended the coasts. Films shot on Burbank back lots and streets have entertained audiences worldwide. Lockheed planes built on Burbank soil flew across the world with the likes of Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh. Once a robust farming community, Burbank, founded on May 1, 1887, and later incorporated as a city on July 8, 1911, dons its name from Dr. David Burbank, a New Hampshireborn dentist who, in 1867, bought over 9,000 acres of land amid the sun-kissed foothills of the Verdugo Mountainsland that was awaiting creative cultivation.

Download The Garden of Invention Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The wide-ranging and delightful history of celebrated plant breeder Luther Burbank and the business of farm and garden in early twentieth- century America At no other time in history has there been more curiosity or concern about the food we eat-and genetically modified foods, in particular, have become both pervasive and suspect. A century ago, however, Luther Burbank's blight-resistant potatoes, white blackberries, and plumcots-a plum-apricot hybrid-were celebrated as triumphs in the best tradition of American ingenuity and perseverance. In his experimental grounds in Santa Rosa, California, Burbank bred and cross-bred edible and ornamental plants-for both home gardens and commercial farms-until they were bigger, hardier, more beautiful, and more productive than ever before. A fascinating portrait of an American original, The Garden of Invention is also a colorful and engrossing tale of the intersection of gardening, science and business in the years between the Civil War and the Great Depression.

Download Early Warner Bros. Studios Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Since 1928, Warner Bros. has produced thousands of beloved films and television shows at the studio's magical 110-acre film factory in Burbank. This collection of evocative images concentrates on the Warner Bros. legacy from the 1920s to the 1950s, when timeless classics such as Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, and East of Eden came to life. It also looks at WB's earlier homes along Hollywood's "Poverty Row," the birthplace of Looney Tunes, and the site of WB's pioneering marriage between film and sound in the 1920s. Early Warner Bros. Studios also tells the tale of four brothers--Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner--scions of a Polish Jewish immigrant family who rose from the humblest of origins to become Hollywood moguls of enormous and lasting influence.

Download Major Gen. Burbank: An Early Paper Maker (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Major Gen. Burbank: An Early Paper Maker Much sympathy was expressed for him at his removal from office, and later measures were put on foot by his friends to have him reinstated. Many who at first were found to be against him, acknowledged the punishment he received to be too severe, and thought his mistakes, if any, did not warrant such harsh measures. For some reason or other, the attempt at reinstate ment was abandoned, and to the last, General Burbank felt great injustice had been done him. Notwithstanding all this, the Gen eral in 1819 was honored by his fellow citizens of Millbury with a seat in the Great and General Court, and the same year headed the list of jurors.
