Tests were conducted to obtain dynamic stability data for sharp and blunted 10-deg half-angle cones. With both a free-oscillation gas bearing pivot balance system and a forced-oscillation cross-flexure pivot balance system, data were obtained at a nominal Mach number of 10 at free-stream Reynolds numbers, based on model length, ranging from 1,800,000 to 3,190,000. The effects of boundary-layer transition, amplitude of oscillation, nose bluntness, and model center-of-gravity location on the dynamic and static stability derivatives are presented. Comparison of data from the free- and forced-oscillation test techniques and the effect of frequency of oscillation on the damping-in-pitch derivatives are also presented. The derivatives are compared with steady and unsteady flow field theories. (Author).

The report presents a summary of the important results obtained on a combined analytical and experimental program for investigation of the hypersonic dynamic stability of re-entry vehicles. An unsteady flow field solution is described which predicts the static and dynamic stability characteristics for vehicles which are executing small amplitude oscillations about zero angle of attack. Solutions were obtained for sharp and blunted, axisymmetric and two-dimensional shapes in real gas equilibrium flow. The experimental program was conducted in AEDC tunnel 'C' at Mach 10 and in the Ling-Temco-Vought Hot Shot tunnel at Mach 14 and 20 to obtain dynamic stability characteristics of a 10 degree cone. Data are presented to show the effect of bluntness ratio, reduced frequency, center of gravity location, Reynolds number and Mach number. Comparisons are made with various theoretical results and limited correlations are shown which establish significant trends.

Download Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 10 Deg Sharp Cone at Hypersonic Speeds and High Angles of Attack Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A free-flying instrumented model was tested in a hypersonic facility at M = 5.30, 6.34 and 9.94 and Re = 300,000 to 1,200,000 ft. Aerodynamic lift, total drag and base drag coefficients were obtained together with detailed base pressure distribution measurements at angles of attack from 0 to 60 deg. The measured lift and drag coefficients showed good agreement with the modified Newtonian theory. The centerline base pressure/free-stream static pressure, psia distribution was nearly independent of the angle of attack from -10 to -30 deg but increased rapidly for all test conditions beyond alpha = -30 deg. For similar conditions at angle of attack and Reynolds number, an increase in Mach number resulted in an increase of the base pressure ratio. The measurements indicated a highly complex base flow region, and tentative explanation of the observed results was offered.

Download Comments on the Use of Measurements of the Effective Moment Parameter (C M Alpha) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
An examination was made of the utilization of the effective moment parameter, that has been used for many years, in relation to a recently devised procedure that involves the concept of an effective angle of attack for the nonlinear motion history being analyzed. This procedure provides an approximate direct relationship between an effective moment parameter measurement and its parent nonlinear moment curve, for a large family of nonlinearities. Both the additional use of the effective moment parameter values and the restraints in their utilization are discussed in relation to small amplitude, large amplitude, and out-of-plane modes of testing.
