This book is a collection of select papers presented at the Tenth Structural Engineering Convention 2016 (SEC-2016). It comprises plenary, invited, and contributory papers covering numerous applications from a wide spectrum of areas related to structural engineering. It presents contributions by academics, researchers, and practicing structural engineers addressing analysis and design of concrete and steel structures, computational structural mechanics, new building materials for sustainable construction, mitigation of structures against natural hazards, structural health monitoring, wind and earthquake engineering, vibration control and smart structures, condition assessment and performance evaluation, repair, rehabilitation and retrofit of structures. Also covering advances in construction techniques/ practices, behavior of structures under blast/impact loading, fatigue and fracture, composite materials and structures, and structures for non-conventional energy (wind and solar), it will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, students and practicing engineers alike.

Beam-column and plane stress finite elements were described for an inelastic analysis of plane RC structures under earthquake-type ground motion. Material nonlinearities in the beam-column finite element were taken into account by considering cyclic inelastic deformations throughout the element. The plane stress finite element allowed for cracking of the element in tension. These elements were incorporated in the DRAIN-2D computer program, which was determined to be flexible and efficient. Preliminary results for simple structures showed that, with the addition of new finite elements described in this report, this program would be very useful for practical investigations of RC structures. A theoretical and experimental investigation was made of the dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete columns. A lumped mass and spring system was established for the theoreticl investigation. The springs of the system were assumed to have elastic, plastic and viscous properties. The dynamic response of this lumped mass system was solved for some actal pulses and an idealized pulse. Ultimate dynamic loads for plain concrete colmns were determined acording to an excessive strin criterion of failure. Experiments were performed on 108 columns of which 26 were loaded statically and 82 dynamically. Comparison of ultimate dynamic loads of all tested columns to the corresponding predicted values from existing design formulas was made. For plain concrete columns, ultimate dynamic loads predicted by the present theory were aso compared with values from experimental results and from design formulas. In general, these results were in good agreement. (Author).
