The author identifies a source of Lambda{sub QCD}/m{sub Q} corrections to the assumption of quark-hadron duality in the application of heavy quark methods to inclusive heavy quark semileptonic decays Q --> ql{anti {nu}}{sub l}. These corrections could substantially affect the accuracy of such methods in practical applications and in particular compromise their utility for the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V{sub cb}.

Download Nonresonant Semileptonic Heavy Quark Decay Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In both the large N{sub c} limit and the valence quark model, semileptonic heavy quark decays are dominated by resonant final states. Using Bjorken's sum rule in an ''unquenched'' version of the quark model, the author demonstrates that nonresonant final states should also be produced at a significant rate in the heavy quark limit. By calculating the individual strengths of a large number of exclusive two-body nonresonant channels, he shows that the total rate for such processes is highly fragmented. He also describes some very substantial duality-violating suppression factors which reduce the inclusive nonresonant rate to a few percent of the total semileptonic rate for the finite quark masses of {anti B} decay, and comment on the importance of nonresonant decays as testing grounds for very basic ideas on the structure, strength, and significance of the q{anti q} sea and on quark-hadron duality in QCD.

Download QCD as a Theory of Hadrons Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This 2004 book provides a pedagogical introduction to the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The text introduces the basic theory of QCD and its historical development, covering pre-QCD ideas of strong interactions such as the quark and parton models, the notion of colours and the S-matrix approach. The author then discusses gauge theory, techniques of dimensional regularization and renormalization, deep inelastic scattering and hard processes in hadron collisions, hadron jets and e+e- annihilations. Other topics include power corrections and the technologies of the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov operating product expansion. The final parts of the book are devoted to modern non-perturbative approaches to QCD and the phenomenological aspects of QCD spectral sum rules. The book will be a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers in high-energy particle and nuclear physics, both theoretical and experimental. This book has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.

Download Heavy Flavour Physics Theory and Experimental Results in Heavy Quark Physics Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book provides a thorough introduction to the phenomenology of heavy flavour physics, those working on the B-factories, LHCb, BTeV, HERA and the Tevatron. It explains how heavy quark theory could be implemented on the lattice, and discusses the status of CP-violation in the neutral kaon system.

Download Heavy Flavours II Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This volume is a collection of review articles on the most outstanding topics in heavy flavour physics. All the authors have made significant contributions to this field. The book reviews in detail the theoretical structure of heavy flavour physics and confronts the Standard Model and some of its extensions with existing experimental data. This new edition covers new trends and ideas and includes the latest experimental information. Compared to the previous edition interesting new activities are included and some of the key contributions are updated. Particular attention is paid to the discovery of the top quark and the determination of its mass.
