Double Blind follows three close friends and their circle through a year of extraordinary transformation. Set inLondon, Cap d'Antibes, Big Sur, and a rewilded corner of Sussex, this thrilling, ambitious novel is about the headlong pursuit of knowledge—for the purposes of pleasure, revelation, money, sanity, or survival—and the consequences of fleeing from what we know about others and ourselves. When Olivia meets a new lover just as she is welcoming her best friend, Lucy, back from New York, her dedicated academic life expands precipitously. Her connection to Francis, a committed naturalist living off the grid, is immediate and startling. Eager to involve Lucy in her joy, Olivia introduces the two—but Lucy has received shocking news of her own that binds the trio unusually close. Over the months that follow, Lucy’s boss, Hunter, Olivia’s psychoanalyst parents, and a young man named Sebastian are pulled into the friends’ orbit, and not one of them will emerge unchanged. Expansive, playful, and compassionate, Edward St. Aubyn's Double Blind investigates themes of inheritance, determinism, freedom, consciousness, and the stories we tell about ourselves. It is as compelling about ecology, psychoanalysis, genetics, and neuroscience as it is about love, fear, and courage. Most of all, it is a perfect expression of the interconnections it sets out to examine, and a moving evocation of an imagined world that is deeply intelligent, often tender, curious, and very much alive.

The International Mystery Double Blind: The Icelandic Manuscript Murders is a wild ride through the cultural landscape of Iceland, from rural farmsteads to icy fjords to the high-tech world of DNA forensics. A young boy disappears in the chill of North Iceland. Twenty years later, a mysterious poem lands on the desk of his twin sister Brynja, a forensic geneticist, and rekindles her hopes that her brother might be alive. As Brynja unravels the clues, more poems arrive, each bearing dire consequences for those who receive them: the guard of the medieval manuscript of Icelandic sagas that may have the answer to her burning question, the prime minister's secretary, the local pastor. Is the poet out to stop Brynja from finding her brother and shut down her access to the DNA database? Or is the verse maker simply a psychopath copycat killer? Fighting the visual auras that have plagued her since childhood and now threaten everything she holds dear, Brynja must summon the strength to navigate the twisted labyrinth of the poet's mind and confront the dark secret buried in her family's past.

In recent years, the paranormal has gained new footing as reality television has grabbed onto this research and created a cultural frenzy around it. There are those who are skeptics, those who believe, and those who seek to prove the existence of the paranormal. In The Double-Blind Ghost Box, authors Shawn Taylor and Daniel Morgan share their research and personal experiences with the paranormal, focusing on the development and use of the ghost box, a device that can establish a two-way communication beyond death’s veil. The Double-Blind Ghost Box reviews the process of Taylor and Morgan’s studies of the device, along with how they determined its usefulness in researching the paranormal. They explore the history of the ghost box and the issues arising in today’s ghost box methods, and they offer methods for conducting an objective ghost box investigation, processing ghost box evidence, analyzing the findings, and presenting the results to clients. Taylor and Morgan also discuss the different spirits an investigation might uncover and future ghost box applications and technologies. Sharing actual transcripts of investigations, The Double-Blind Ghost Box works toward communicating the existence of the paranormal through objective research. Shawn Taylor has a technical background in computer hardware, software, programming, digital media, Six Sigma problem solving, statistical analysis, psychology, and counseling. Daniel Morgan earned degrees in behavioral science and electrical engineering.

Despite the fact that the average woman spends one third of her life after the menopause, medical research has been devoted almost entirely to the repro ductive period of her life span. This is perhaps not surprising in our youth orientated society and yet there is increasing evidence that properly applied and supervised hormonal therapy could alleviate many of the severe physical symptoms which are associated with the ovarian menopause and that in the long term other aspects of physical deterioration could be modified. This lack of scientific research has made it difficult to assess which symptoms are due to the altered hormonal status of the post-menopausal period and which are due to the normal process of ageing, or the various psychological pressures which build up around most women in the fourth and fifth decades of life. In America doctors have been treating the 'menopausal syndrome' with estrogens for over 30 years, but in the United Kingdom gynaecologists and family doctors have been reticent to prescribe these steroid preparations. As a consequence, they have been labelled reactionary by the media and while there may be some truth -in this, it should be remembered that the hazar. ds associated with synthetic estrogens in the contraceptive pill were first brought to light by British epidemiological surveys.
