Excerpt from D'orsay or the Complete Dandy What a delightful fellow is your complete dandy. No mere clothes' prop he, the coat does not make the dandy; no mere flaneur in fine garments; far more than that is our true dandy. Though there is not any authority for making the statement, we do not think that we are wrong in asserting that on the day when Adam first complained to Eve that she had not cut his fig-leaf breeches according to the latest fashion dandyism was born. It is not dead yet, only moribund, palsied, shaking and decrepit with old age, blown upon by an over-practical world of money-spinners and money-spenders. Joy seems to have become a thing of which it is necessary to go in pursuit; in the golden days of the dandies it was a good comrade which came almost without hailing to those who desired its company. A real dandy would wither and wilt in a world where joy is so much of a stranger as it is now to most folk. It is curious that there does not exist any history of the Rise, Decline and Fall of Dandyism, a subject fit for the pen of Gibbon. From his first appearance in London in 1821 until his death in Paris in 1852, Count D'Orsay dominated and scandalized the whole of European society. For three decades he was the ultimate arbiter in matters of taste, style and fashion -- what D'Orsay wore today, society would wear tomorrow. He also enthralled Society with the thirty-year soap opera of his relationship with Lady Blessington, whose daughter he married and with whose husband he was suspected of having had an affair. Bisexual, flamboyant and outrageous, D'Orsay was said to have ruined the cream of British aristocracy. He toured Europe on an enormous spending spree; paid homage to a dying Lord Byron in Italy, set up a racing course in Notting Hill and a gambling den in St James's. Nick Foulkes' Last of the Dandies is a vivid biography of an astonishingly flamboyant figure and a dazzling portrait of an era.

D'Orsay (1801-52) was a French amateur artist, dandy and man of fashion in the early to mid-19th century. During a visit to London in 1821 he formed a close bond with Charles Gardiner, 1st Earl of Blessington and his wife Marguerite, Lady Blessington. After Lord Blessington's death in 1829 he continued to be a close companion to the widowed Countess whose London home hosted the most prominent members of fashionable literary and artitic society. D'Orsay had married Harriet Gardiner, Blessington's daughter by his first wife, in 1827 although it was not a happy union and a legal separation took place in 1838. This biography by W Teignmouth Shore (1865-1932) was first published in 1911 and includes 17 full-page illustrations.
