Documents Concerning Central Europe from the Hospital’s Rhodian Archives, 1314–1428 brings together over 450 texts concerning the Hospitallers during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These texts are crucial sources for understanding the history of the Hospitallers between 1314 and 1428. Whilst some Hospitaller charters and letters have been published elsewhere, few scholarly editions contain enough sources to permit close analysis of the language and contents of these documents. Moreover, most previous editions focus on certain geographical areas, such as Cyprus, Rhodes and the Aegean Islands. In contrast, this book is the first of its kind to focus on central Europe. It brings together 460 texts dated between 1314 to 1428, and two from 1461. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval history and the history of Central Europe, as well as those interested in the legal structures and personal networks within the Order of St. John.

Settlement and Crusade in the Thirteenth Century sheds new light on formerly less explored aspects of the crusading movement and the Latin East during the thirteenth century. In commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the construction of 'Atlit Castle, a significant section of this volume is dedicated to the castle, which was one of the most impressive built in the Latin East. Scholarly debate has centred on the reasons behind the construction of the castle, its role in the defence of the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the thirteenth century, and its significance for the Templar order. The studies in this volume shed new light on diverse aspects of the site, including its cemetery and the surveys conducted there. Further chapters examine Cyprus during the thirteenth century, which under the Lusignan dynasty was an important centre of Latin settlement in the East, and a major trade centre. In 1522, the Ottomans attacked the island of Rhodes and, after a six-month siege, the Hospitallers surrendered on terms. The Knights Hospitaller had ruled Rhodes since 1309, and the Ottomans had attempted to capture the island 40 years before in 1480, but were defeated by the Knights. The Ottoman victory in 1522 resulted in the Knights being expelled from the island and eventually settling in Malta, Gozo, and Tripoli and the Ottomans obtaining domination over the Eastern Mediterranean and its trade. This collection of essays, published on the 500th anniversary of the siege, explores such question as why Suleiman the Magnificent attacked Rhodes, what made the 1522 siege successful, and how the Rhodian population, the Knights Hospitaller, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, and Europe in general were affected by the loss of Rhodes. The answers to these questions are explored in new research by expert historians and archaeologists in their field.
