Last paragraph of Introduction: The purpose of this effort, Oklahoma Winter Botany, is to provide a mechanism for the identification of the woody flora of the state and encompasses all species with above ground woody tissue during the winter, including vines, shrubs and trees. Not infrequently smaller shrubs are semi-woody, dying back to near soil level yearly. Although these forms have been included, many may be keyed only to the genus level recognizing the difficulty of identification to the species. A few naturalized species have been included but only where they are locally cultivated and of significant interest (Ginkgo biloba L.) or have demonstrated the ability to become established, even temporarily, with the native flora (Ailanthus altissima (Miller) Swingle). The scientific and common names of the trees follow Little's Checklist of United States Trees, Forest Service, Agricultural Handbook No. 541, 1979. Waterfall's Keys to the Flora of Oklahoma (1979( has been used as the authority for the vines and shrubs unless otherwise indicated. No effort has been made to provide identification below species level and all varietal, formal, and hybrid names have been arbitrarly omitted.--Paul Buck--University of Tulsa--December 1983.
